Sharp, painful, piercing, stabbing. Words like a dagger, straight through two hearts at once. "I can't do this anymore" were what Elize said to him. Gus couldn't act like he didn't deserve it, he knew he very much did. It was a rather easy thing, not at all what he deserved. He should have been exiled or publicly executed. Instead, he was killed inside, and it somehow felt much, much worse. Yet, they came around again. Him and Elize were back at it again in a few weeks. I wish I could tell you that they stayed like that, happily. But I can't, because that's not what happened. Absolute hell is, however, what happened. It all started when Gus looked into the eyes of his lover, and finally told her the three cursed words; "I love you." With these, he made a promise that he had to keep forever. Each day that would come after this, would be a day where he woke up with Elize on his mind and purely got lost in what he wanted to do with the relationship. He yearned for it to soar across the sky, and to never fizzle out. But, all shooting stars quit burning at some point. Neither of them wanted to ignite it again. Not at the time, at least. It would've taken a whole matchbook to even get some flame out of the relationship again, and nobody carries matches anymore.
BITTER COLD : chapter 2, cont.
October, November, December. Freezing weather, and a particular sad and low season for Gus. He sat in his room one day, justifying why he hasn't done anything besides work at his job and sleep for the past few weeks. What friends did he have anyways? He lost them all when he lost Elize. He had always been depressed, but right now he was literally decaying from the inside-out. He still lived with his mom, even though he had more than enough cash to go awol and live by himself. He just sat around though, writing boring music and barely existing all by himself. Today though, he was leaning out of his window, staring at the blank sheet of cold white sky dandruff on the ground, smoking a cigarette he stole from his mom. His mother knocked on his door, walked in, and told him "someone's at the door for you." He flicked the cigarette out of his window and followed her out to the front door, and standing there, coated in white, was Elize. She gave a warm smile that seemed to not only melt Gus' heart, but also the snow off of her. She walked right past him like he was a ghost, straight into his room and took off her coat. She beckoned at him to come into the room, so he walked in and shut the door behind himself. Elize then looked at him up and down and said a set of words that he never thought he'd ever hear from her. "I missed you." She started crying diamonds from her shining blue eyes. All it took was one embrace, and they were hooked again. It was rather ironic, with her last name being Winters, she actually kept away the bitter cold from Gus. He was warm around her. He felt alive again.
MEMENTO : chapter 2, cont.
It had been a whole seven months since Elize came over. She had never left, she lived with Gus now, basically. In order to "make the room look less like a cave and more like a living space" she went out of her way to decorate the room properly, but not straying too far away from Gus' original room look. She bought a plastic dog, and put in on a bookshelf she bought. Right next to a strange book of matches with yellow tips. Neither of them could make out what the label said, but they thought that it was cool for the color. They decided the matches should have some subliminal meaning to their relationship and they both promised to never burn a single match in order to represent the preservation of their love. The two seemed stable, for once, and they seemed happy too. Gus had a feeling that he shouldn't take it for granted, because he's not stupid and he knows that life just hates him for some reason and likes to mess his life up. Gus wasn't wrong.
