He felt it when he got in his car. It didn't really hit him when he was in Max's house, but it surely hit him now. It was getting harder to see the road, or anything, as his eyes filled with tears and it started seeming like he was looking through a kaleidoscope. He wiped his eyes and kept speeding through the streets, ignoring some stop signs. Gus just wanted to get home and lay in bed. He didn't have to work for a while, he only rarely got called in and that was on the weekends. He had nothing to keep him busy, so he just wanted to sleep for a while. He honestly dreaded what it would start to be like without Elize in his life permanently. At least he didn't have to buy a plane ticket anymore. That was the last thing on his mind though, he just kept worrying so much about her. What if she already moved on? A million things were coursing through his head. His chest hurt when he pulled into his driveway, and when he walked inside his mother pelted him with questions. "Where were you" "Why didn't you tell me" all the usual. Gus spit out a few answers, said sorry, and headed up to his room. He got in, locked the door behind himself, and threw all of his weight onto his bed. Gus started sobbing heavily, and he had a fair reason to. He felt as if his life was falling apart because everything he once had was slowly slipping away from him. As he was in his fetal position on his bed, his phone dinged. He pulled it out of his pocket and saw a text from Max.
"Hey goose. Holding up okay?"
Gus replied,
"been worse."
"Aw, well I hope the sun starts shining brighter for you."
"me too. this sucks."
After that, Max didn't reply. Gus forgave it because he knew she wasn't the best at talking to people.

ONCE AGAIN : chapter seven cont.

She missed him. She really, really missed him. Gus was the greatest thing to ever happen to Max, he did so many great things for her. She felt bad for using Elize's departure from Gus for her own gains, but she felt as if she would be a better option for Gus' well-being. After all, they had been way more stable and they seemed to fit together much better as well. A little while after he left her house, she sent him a text but she didn't want to be annoying so she kept their conversation short. Tossing her phone onto the couch, Max went into her room and pulled open her nightstand drawer. She pushed aside her junk and pulled out the mixtape Gus made for her when they were together. Max just sat there and stared at it for a while, remembering everything her and Gus had done together. Max cracked open the plastic case and pulled out the disc. She popped it into her CD player and hit the start button. The song that started playing from the speakers made tears roll down Max's face. It was "The Ghost of You" by My Chemical Romance. Gus and her had their first kiss to this song, and Max would never forget it. She instantly ran to get her phone and decided to call Gus and spill her guts to him, she only hoped that he would take it the right way.

"Hello? Gus?"
"hi max. what do you need?"
"Well, I've just been thinking a lot lately and I've got something to say."
"spill it."
"I'm still in love with you, Gus. I want you back."

Silence filled Max's phone speaker.

"Gus?"
"max, look, it's been rough for me lately. i can't just move on, it hasn't even been a week. i'm sorry, you know i'll always love you but i just don't know if i can be with you."
"I understand. I can wait for you, August."

Max didn't know that "waiting" for Gus would cost her months of her life.
