~Iris~

My birthday was Sunday and that four day interval between then and Friday felt like four hours.

Before I could even process my rapidly changing life, it was time to go back out into the world I know nothing about. As on my birthday, there were the same clothes on my dresser and the same boots right next to them. I honestly didn't know what to feel; Was I scared? Confused? I've asked myself this same question once before but the answer still puzzled me, and though it felt like it was right there in front of my face, I could never quite grasp it.

I traipsed down the stairs, and my father was there already in his gear and sipping on his black coffee. Never quite understood the appeal of straight black coffee, it was bitter and plain, just as my life used to be. My preferred cup of joe, would be with a cup of milk and a teaspoon of caramel, although my dad insisted it would rot my teeth, I love it anyway.

"Ready to head out for your second run?"

My dad seemed antsy to hop in the truck and find another nest, but my interest was rather peaked in other aspects. Like, when am I going to not have to wake up at ungodly hours in the morning to hunt fucking vampires, and why can't we just be a normal father and daughter who go do normal stuff like mini golf. I would KILL to play a game of mini golf...wait no, ugh I don't know, I just want to be normal, but like that would happen anytime so

"Hey spacey, lets get a move on it shall we, the sun won't wait for us and neither will the supernatural."

"Alright, alright I'm ready."

I follow my dad and hopped into the truck, the engine starts, and we're on our way. I gaze through the window at the still darkened sky, I think about the saying;

"When the sun rises, one rises with it."

Oh, how I wish that were true to my life. Unfortunately mine goes a little different;

"When the supernatural are up, one must be up with them."

The tires screech, and the truck comes to a halt in front of a large opening before stretching into an even bigger forest of trees. What is the difference between this time and the last one, I think I'm more dumbfounded now as to what is happening.

I wrap my fingers around the door handle and push open the passenger door. The smell of the early morning gives me a run for my money, and so many things rush to my head. I suddenly remember the two vampires that confronted me...and the werewolf that fought them off...

A familiar smell appeared in my nose, the same one the vampires had, but different. My forehead becomes wrinkled, and my brows furrowed.

How come I didn't seem to notice these smells before, and why were they so strong?

As I circled around to the back of the truck to meet my father, I reached to pull my bow and arrows out, and swung them across my back. My father looked as though he was decided which ice cream to eat, rather than which weapon he was going to use to kill vampires will.

Mmmmm, chocolate chainsaw or strawberry machete. Oh look he decided to go for cookie dough crossbow instead, what a delectable choice.

Finally we head over to the field where our killing will commence, we have approximately 3 hours before the sun rises and the rats go back into hiding. That gives me till 6am to avoid dying. can't wait.

"Okay now same as last time, we split up to cover ground, but don't stray too far."

"O-okay, are you sure we can't stay together?"

My voice is shaky as I don't really want to encounter anymore unsavory creatures, and the chances of me dying would we be way less if I was accompanied by a gigantic man wielding a fucking crossbow.

My dad took a huge sigh, then nodded his head as a way of saying;

"Okay, sure, whatever."

We traveled into the forest in search of, I don't know, whatever my dad was searching for.

My father abruptly stopped, I almost ran into him, and was about to ask for why, that's when I realized there was an abandoned house standing right across from us.

"Alright, I'll canvas the inside while you check around the outside."

"Oh-, uh okay sure."

My dad takes a stance, and cautiously walks into the house, while I stand there for a few seconds not sure of what I should do exactly. After deliberating in my head some, I couldn't think of anything else to do with a lower mortality rate, so I decide the check out the outside of this home, if you could call it that.

I padded around the perimeter of this wooden contraption not sure what I was looking for. It looked as though not a soul had stepped foot here in a long while, then again vampires don't have souls so I mean. As I surrounded the edge of the house, I came across one of those old cellar doors, the ones that are kind of angled towards the ground with two openings doors. The metal doors were all rusted and the paint all chipped off save for a few discolored flakes. I leaned down to open the doors and pulled at the handles, and with one swift movement upward the doors opened. The absolute stench of death invaded my nose, and I stepped back a few and tripped over a lock.

"Hmph, where did this come from?" Was there a lock on the doors I didn't notice.... No, no it couldn't have, I wouldn't have been able to rip a lock...

I shook my head in disbelief at the outrageous thoughts I was having, there was most definitely no way I could've done that. Trying to get out of my own head I stood up, dusted myself off, and proceeded into the stinky underground.
