2014 ― Washington D.C.
"It's not fair. You both have super serum's in your bloodstreams.""On your left."
Steve said as he and Katherine both passed Sam Wilson while they were running through downtown D.C. hitting all the tourists spots on their run. The run that Katherine asked if he wanted to go on. Whenever Sam doesn't run with Katherine, she runs with Steve, and since neither of them get tired, they always go into friendly competition of trying to outrun each other, just for fun.
"On your left." Katherine said as they passed him again.
"Uh-huh. On my left. Got it." He said, and they continued to run. Once they got to a different spot, and the two were about to pass him again, he could hear their footsteps coming up behind him.
"Don't say it. Don't you say it." Sam said.
"On your left." The couple said together.
"Come on!" Sam said in frustration. He found himself sitting down in front of a tree, while Katherine and Steve continued to try and outrun each other. Both of them, not sweating in the slightest, or out of breath, and Katherine feeling like she could outrun her problems was easily able to lap around Steve a couple of times.
"Need a medic?" She asked when she and Steve walked to the tree that Sam was sitting under, out of breath. Sam just laughed as they approached.
"I need a new set of lungs." He said, taking a deep breath. "You two just ran, like. . 13 miles in 30 minutes, and it's not fair. You both have super serum's in your bloodstreams." He said.
"Yet, you always agree to run with me." Katherine said, pointing a finger at him.
"And regret it every time." He said, which made the brunette laugh.
"I guess I got a late start." Steve said, shrugging his shoulders.
"Oh really? You should be ashamed of yourself." Sam said, which made Katherine laugh more. "You should take another lap." He said.
"Don't tempt me." Katherine said.
"Did you just take it? I assume you just took it." He said.
"What unit you with?" Steve asked, pointing to his crewneck that he had on.
"58th Pararescue. But now I'm working down at the VA. Sam Wilson." He introduced himself to Steve, and Katherine smiled. It was nice for them to finally meet. She had told Steve when she met him for the first time, when she ran into him and Steve liked that. It's been the two of them for nearly two years, and she knows Katherine hasn't seen Natasha since New York, so he was happy that she was able to make another friend.
Katherine helped Sam off the ground as Steve nodded his head. "Steve Rogers." He said.
"She talks about you." He said, nudging Katherine's shoulders.
"All good things I hope." Steve said.
"Must've freaked you out coming home after the whole defrosting thing." Sam said.
"It takes some getting used to. It's good to meet you, Sam. . and thanks for always running with her when she needs it." Steve said, as he turned to walk away, and Katherine looked at Sam.
"Until next time, Wilson." She said.
"It's your bed, right?" Sam called out after him.
"What's that?" Steve asked as he turned around.
"Your bed, it's too soft. When I was over there, I'd sleep on the ground, and use rocks for pillows like a caveman. Now I'm home, lying in my bed, and it's like. .-" Steve cut in.
". .-Lying on a marshmallow. Feel like I'm going to sink right to the floor." Steve said, and they both nodded their heads. "How long?" He asked.
"Two tours. You two must miss the good old days, huh?" Sam asked. Katherine shrugged her shoulders. She kinda liked the times now.
"Well, things aren't so bad. Food's a lot better. We used to boil everything. No polio is good. Internet, so helpful. I've been reading that a lot, trying to catch up." Steve said. Sam looked directly at Katherine.
"Do you help at all, or just watch him struggle?" He asked, which made her laugh.
"When he wants help, I step in." She said.
"Marvin Gaye, 1972, Trouble Man soundtrack. Everything you missed, jammed into one album." Sam said, and Steve took out his small notebook and pen to write it down.
"I'll put it on the list." He said. Then Katherine's phone started beeping. She took it out of her pocket, and noticed that it was a new mission alert, but she knew exactly who it was from.
Her best friend, Natasha Romanoff.
She hasn't seen her since New York, because they've both been doing their own separate missions for S.H.I.E.L.D. some things that Katherine had to do was because of her clear alpha level of jurisdiction in S.H.I.E.L.D. but she was happy that she was going to be getting back in the field with one of the few people she trusts the most.
"Alright, Sam. Duty calls. Again, thanks for running with me." Katherine said to her friend.
"Yeah, if that's what you want to call running." Steve said, as the two of them shook hands again. Katherine laughed while shaking her head.
"Oh, that's how it is?" Sam said.
"That's how it is." Steve said, nodding his head.
"Anytime you two want to stop by the VA, make me look awesome in front of the girl at the front desk, just let me know." He said, which made Katherine laugh.
"We'll keep that in mind." Steve said, and then a revving car pulled up the curb, and when the window was rolled down, Natasha sat behind the wheel. She gave Katherine a smirk, which the brunette just returned with a wink.
"Hey guys, any of you know where the Smithsonian is? I'm here to pick up a fossil." Natasha said, as Steve and Katherine walked to the car. Steve opened the door for her and Katherine climbed in the back while Steve sat up front.
"That's hilarious." Steve said to her.
"How you doing?" Sam asked Natasha.
"Hey." She said back to him, and Steve looked at his newfound friend.
"Can't run everywhere." He said.
"No you can't." Sam said as Natasha rolled up the window and drove off with the couple in tow.
Time for a mission.
