The rain.
I try to focus my thoughts on the rain. It is raining.
It is wet and it washes everything away. Some people may absolutely hate the rain, its cold and wet and ruins gatherings outdoors, what a shame. That's not how I see it though, the rain is life and brings new life, without the rain, there would be no beautiful flowers to blossom in the sun and without rain, everything would be the same. I believe the rain brings change.
Its only fitting that it rains now as I drive toward my new home. Others may think that moving away from home is a daunting idea, but for me, it is a dream come true. It's not that I didn't love my home with my family, I can't imagine my life without them, but I knew it was time for me to find my own place. When I was looking for somewhere to move, I knew it had to be different. If living in the city taught me anything it was that I'm never going to live there again, I never liked how we had to drive to the park and we never had enough room in our house or even just having to see road after road when walking to school.
I just needed new scenery.
And gosh did I find it.
Greenwood.
A rather odd name for a town, I'll admit but when I went to see the actual town and I saw how embedded in nature it was, I fell in love, to say the least. Never had I seen a place where I felt like I belonged and for some strange reason, I felt like Greenwood was where I needed to be.
So, I packed my bags and here I am moving to a new town, with new people and a new life. I thought I would be more scared or worried, it should be intimidating. The only emotion I can feel though is this shroud of nothing, I just feel ready.
I reach over to the passenger seat towards the biscuits my mum had made me, claiming they would keep me with her a little while longer. I smile at the memory of her shoving the biscuits in my bag before she started crying for the fifth time today, making me promise her I would call her all the time and how thankful she is that I taught her how to video chat.
That brings us here, pulling into my new house, it's small but I don’t need a lot. I don’t leave my car yet as the rain seems to be turning into a storm, but I look at it, my home, and I feel pride because I bought this myself no one helped me; I didn’t grow up in a rich family and I’ve had to work for almost everything I wanted but this house that I own just shows how much everything I’ve done has actually paid off.
I stay in my car for a while longer enjoying the sound and the smell of the rain, I pull my hoodie over my head and close my eyes and just listen to the rain.
How it washes away dirt and snails that thought they were finally gonna get to the other side of the road.

It didn’t take me long to unpack as I didn’t bring that much and because I had planned out exactly where I wanted everything when I started to actually unpack it took no time at all.
The only thing I needed to do was to go into town to buy some paint and some food supplies, and maybe if I liked anything some home decor stuff as I could never help myself.
It had been a couple of days since I had arrived in my new home town but this would be the very first time going out and meeting the community.
I walked out and locked the doors and decided to walk instead of taking my car. It was about a twenty-minute walk and it would give me time to really look at the area, clear my head and maybe even make some new animal friends. I secretly believed I had the powers of Snow white and could converse with squirrel folk; they never talk back but its better than talking to myself I suppose.
I get to town and am surprised at how busy it was, it was nowhere as busy as the city but it still surprised me, I cringed at my ignorance, I don’t know but I always just assumed that only cities were extremely crowded, apparently everywhere you go has people even towns in the middle of nowhere.
I walk towards a small shop I assume sells paint due to the smell and walk in, there were only about two other customers in here, but as soon as I walked in their heads snapped up to me and stayed on me, they stared for what seemed like a full minute until carrying on with their business.
Odd.
I got what I needed and walked over to another shop and bought the necessities: bread, eggs, orange juice, Nutella and ketchup. Just things you can’t live without basically.
On my way back I spotted an old shop selling decor. Finally, I can buy some stuff to put in my new house. I walk in and look around. I noticed a lot of the stuff is wood based and mainly about animals. There was this giraffe pillow that just spoke to me, and a really soft blanket with a whale on it that seems like a needed investment, on my way to pay I spotted I carved figure ornament.
It was a wolf.
It was painted red, you could tell it was made of wood easily enough, but it was beautiful regardless.
“People around here believe that wolves are the most adventurous and cunning creatures” I snap my head up started by the lady speaking to me from the front desk.
“I’m sorry dear I didn’t mean to scare you” she smiles at me
“oh no it's okay I was just lost in thought, I’m sorry what did you say about it?” I motion to the wolf carving
“the folks around here believe that wolves are descended from night terrors, horrible nightmares, in fact, some claim that they run around in the night capturing the wicked. Depends on what you believe though, I think it’s just a load of babble.” She smiles at me; I think intending to lighten the atmosphere from.....that.
I pick the wolf up and add it to my whale blanket and giraffe pillow.
“you’re the girl that’s moved into the cottage at the edge of pine street right?” this lady is very chatty.
“yeah I am” I answered smiling slightly
“your a very pretty young lass aren’t ya ” she tells me. I thank her and hand her my money
“you’re not very chatty are you sweetheart” I sigh, can I just have my pillow lady.
“no sorry” I smile at her to show I meant no offense
“well here you go, come back soon” she hands me the bag but gripping my arm in the process I look up to her shocked
“I still wouldn’t go out into the woods after dark though just to be safe,” she says now looking straight at me, with what looks like fear in her eyes.
I snatch my arm out of her grip rushing out.
What the hell was that?
She really defines the term kooky old lady.
At least I got what I wanted; to meet the community so far not very impressed.
