I'm not sure how much time passes before someone walks into the bathroom and calls my name. "Kyleigh?"
Recognizing the voice instantly, I call back, "C-Caitlyn?"
"Are you okay? What's wrong?"
I back away from the stall door and it opens partially. "I'm in the last s-stall," I sob.
Caitlyn pushes the door open and her eyes meet mine. Then she notices my hands, and her eyes go wide in shock. "Kyleigh," she says, backing away in fear, "what is going on?"
"I d-don't know!" I cry. I don't know h-how to stop!"
"Um... try to calm down?" Caitlyn suggests, sounding more like she is asking a question.
I close my eyes, trying to pretend I am somewhere else. I imagine myself laying in my bed, as if this isn't happening, as if I'm only dreaming.
Maybe I am dreaming. Maybe I haven't woken up on Monday morning yet. Maybe I was never actually hit by lightning and I just haven't woken up from this strange dream yet...
After a moment, Caitlyn says my name, bringing me back to reality. I open my eyes to see her cautiously walking toward me again. Looking at my hands, I am filled with relief to see that the electricity is gone.
"Now do you believe something strange is going on?" I ask Caitlyn.
She nods her head in response, shock still evident on her face.
**************************
"I honestly don't know how I'm supposed to do this," I say out loud, not sure if I am talking to Caitlyn or to myself. We are standing in the middle of a field where the corn hasn't grown out yet.
"I don't know what to do either," Caitlyn says. "Maybe you just have to, uh... concentrate?"
"Concentrate, right." I take a few steps away from Caitlyn, just to be safe, and I close my eyes.
What do I concentrate on? Lightning? Yeah, that sounds good.
LIghtning. Lightning. Lightning.
I repeat the word over and over in my head, but nothing happens. I open my eyes and look at Caitlyn, shaking my head. "It isn't working."
She shrugs her shoulders in an I-don't-know-what-to-do kind of way.
I sigh and close my eyes, trying again.
LIghtning. Lightning. Lightning.
After a minute or so of nothing happening, I open my eyes and stomp my foot on the ground in frustration. "Ugh! How am I supposed to make this work?
"I don't know," Caitlyn answers, clearly bored.
I roll my eyes and turn away from her. Frustrated, I attempt one last time. I clench my hands into fists and close my eyes, focusing as much as I can.
Lightning. Lightning. Lightning.
This time, I can tell something is happening. The air changes; I feel...electricity in the air.
Lightning. Lightning. Lighning.
I don't know if I'm imagining it or not, but I hear the rumble of thunder. I keep my eyes closed.
Lightning. Lightning. Lightning.
I feel a strong wind spin around me, whipping my long brown hair in my face. I keep focusing.
Lightning. Lightning. Lightning.
"Kyleigh," Caitlyn shouts, her voice partially drowned out by the wind. "Kyleigh!"
My eyes snap open, and I look at my hands, finding no glow of electricy on them like I saw in the bathroom earlier today. Confused, I turn around and see that Caitlyn has, in the past minute or two, moved farther away from me. I guess the distance to be maybe fifty or sixty feet. I look at her, questioningly, wondering why she shouted my name. I can't read her expression from this distance. The wind continues whipping my hair as I look up at the large, grey storm clouds that weren't there moments ago.
A faint glow begins in the cloud directly above me. It quickly forms into a jagged yellow line. I gasp when I realize the lightning bolt is heading straight down towards me. I run towards Caitlyn and turn around just in time to see the lightning strike the ground exactly where I was standing only a moment ago. I sigh in relief as I try to catch my breath.
"How..." Caitlyn says in shock, and I look at her. "How did you do that?"
"I... concentrated?" I say, not really knowing the answer myself.
"No, not that..."
That's when my brain finally registers what just happened. Lightning flashes last for only a couple seconds. I saw the strike begin and then ran at least fifty feet before I saw it hit the ground. I just ran faster than what I believe is physically possible.
"Kyleigh," Caitlyn says to me, "you have super powers."
"I have super powers," I repeat her. "I have super powers? How is this even possible? I can't have super powers. I... I must be dreaming! That's the only thing that makes sense! I'm dreaming." I begin pounding on my head with my hand saying, "Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!"
Caitlyn grabs my arm and pulls it down by my side. "Stop! You're scaring me."
"Am I going crazy?" I ask her.
She shakes her head. "No, not unless I am crazy, too."
"I guess we are both crazy then," I let out a small laugh and Caitlyn smiles, but the only thing I can think is I have super powers?!?
