"we thought you were gone."

we were broken children. ripped away from civilisation too early. we taught ourselves how to deal with such situations, when we shouldn't have to. underneath masks of light, long hair and freckles was sun-burn and hurt, decorated with pigs blood and dried clay.

jack merridew stood six feet away from me. we were staring at each other, in love and in hatred. i recalled the kiss on the beach, and the kiss on the rocks. i longed for him again.

jack merridew stood seven feet away from me and i was losing him.

jack merridew stood ten feet away from me and i cried. i cried for simon, i cried for piggy. i cried for ralph. i cried for our island, and the destruction we caused it. i cried for jack, especially. i cried for the way he had become. the way he had broken down inside, and given into his deepest, cruelest desires. i cried for him.

jack merridew stood twenty feet away from me and we were losing each other.

"i'm so glad you're home."
