"What was the name of the town again?" I asked glancing in the mirror on the sun visor. Trying to fix my hair, that is a deep brown that fades to blonde at the tips.
"For the last time Kailani, it's called Misery Bay." My older brother Keanu said laughing.
I turned around and looked at him in the backseat, you can definitely tell that we are related. We both have brown hair, - His a little darker than mine - and the same tan skin and hazel eyes.
I turned towards my little brother Keni who is asleep next to Keanu, he looks like us too but his eyes are a light blue."No, I know your joking. What's it really called?" I asked getting annoyed.
Our mom Nani laughed "No Kailani, he is serious. It's called Misery Bay." She said glancing at me for a second before returning her eyes to the road.
"Wait, really? We're moving to a place called Misery? Are we in a Stephen King story now? Is it like horrible there or something?" I asked, Confusion notable in my tone."Stephen King books usually take place in Maine. Not Michigan. So probably not." Our mom said chuckling and shaking her head.
"It has a long background, but I'm not sure why it's called that. Maybe it has something to do with the tornadoes." Keanu said laughing.
Before I even had a chance to tell him not to joke about tornadoes, mom spoke.
"Keanu! I said not to say anything!" She snapped at him.
"Wait, Tornadoes? Your joking right? We are moving somewhere with tornadoes?" I said screeching a bit. "Why would you make me move here? You know my biggest fear is tornadoes!"
Mom just sighed. "You know I didn't have a choice. We lost our house. We didn't have anywhere else to go. They offered me a nice job that comes with a nice house." She explained again, for the tenth time.
I sighed in defeat. "I know mom. E Kala Mai I'ua. Your right. I'm just salty we had to leave Honolulu." I said sadly, using a common Hawaiian apology.
The conversation broke off as mom's phone started to ring. She nodded at me to answer it for her.
"Hey. Nani here. What can I do for you?" She asked using her business voice as I put the phone on speaker.
"Hey, just wondering if you guys are close by? We kinda have an issue." The girl on the phone asked. By the sound of her voice, she is probably around my age. maybe twenty like Keanu. But definitely not older than twenty-five.
Mom frowned "Were like less than an hour away. What's wrong?" She asked turning off the freeway.
"Oh uh. We will fill you in when you get here." The girl said quickly before hanging up.
"Well that was cryptic," Keanu said laughing. "So what's the deal with the other family?" He added glancing at mom.
Mom frowned. "I don't know much. From what the oldest told me, their mother who was the previous vet just recently died. She didn't say how. But now they are orphans and needed some help around the rescue. She said someone put in a reference for my work. But that's about all. Theirs four of them. The oldest girl, two middle boys and the youngest is also a girl. She didn't say much else." Mom said shrugging her shoulders.
"That's sad. I feel bad about there mom. It must be hard to run a rescue by themselves. I'm glad we're going to be able to help them." I said looking down at my hands.
Mom says I've always been very empathetic. She says It's a good trait, it will help me tell if people are good or bad.Mom sighed and nodded before brightening up. "This is it. We are officially in Misery Bay." She said gesturing out the windows.
"Oh wow," I whispered in awe as I gazed out the window.
