All of a sudden I was jolted awake and I didn't understand why. I hadn't been dreaming and my parents were still asleep. I turned over to see my alarm clock. I sighed. It's only one in the morning. I turned over and thought about what day it was. It's Friday. That means today is the carnival with TJ and his friends. Why did I have to remember that now? I turned over to face the ceiling, eyes wide open. I turned over and closed my eyes. I let my random thoughts take over. How do we know that we all see the same colors? What if red to me is blue to TJ? How do we know for sure that green is green to everyone? What if black to someone else is white to me? That would be weird. Do dogs and cats think in barks and meows? Can cats talk to other cats by meowing? What does English sound like to people who don't speak English? There are two kids in my history class who speak Spanish. I wonder what they think we are saying about them. I just don't understand how people don't know English. Cyrus, what are you talking about. With that, I drifted off to sleep waking up only to the sound of my alarm.

When I woke up I thought about my day. I have school and then rehearsal, and then I have the game. Rehearsal goes until 6 and the game starts at 7, so do I have time to go home and then change? No, I will just wear what I wear to school to the game. I pulled a yellow t-shirt out of my closet along with a pair of khakis. I fixed my hair as usual and left for school.

"Buffy, are you going to come or not?" I looked at her across the lunch table. We hadn't talked about tonight all week.

"Yea, but I am not talking to TJ," she compromised, "Also I'm bringing Marty."

"Ok," At least she was going to come.

The rest of the school day all I could do was think about the carnival tonight I was excited about the carnival. It was a big thing that they did on the school property. It was a huge fundraiser for the school. The whole town went. I had never gone. I would much rather be home watching a movie with my friends on a Friday night.

In math class, all I could think about was helping TJ learn the things we were learning today. I imagined him in class staring blankly at the board as he tried to comprehend how you got 1024 from 4 to the 5th power.

I stood on stage learning the dance to The Farmer and the Cowman. We all laughed as we tried to do the square dance Mrs. James was teaching us. Iris, the girl I dated in 7th grade, was my partner. We linked arms and danced around each other. When some of the ensemble did cool jumps we all watched in awe at how well some of them could dance. We made jokes and laughed all rehearsal. It was a nice way to end my school day on a Friday night.

I have to leave in 10 minutes. My heart was pounding and I had butterflies in my stomach. I was nervous to go to the carnival with TJ. When I got to the school TJ was standing by the gate. I waved to him as I walked up the field.

"Hey, TJ," I said as I walked up to him.

"Hey, Cyrus!" He sounded excited.

When our friends got there we decided what we wanted to do. The first thing we did was buy our tickets. Once we all got our tickets we split into groups. Lester and Reed ran off with some of the other boys they hung around. Andi, Jonah, Buffy, and Marty had left to go on some of the rides I wouldn't go on.

"I don't really like rides," I admitted.

"That's ok," he said to me.

"Are you sure?" I made a face at him.

"Yes, Cy. It's fine," he laughed, "We'll go on the least scary stuff."

"Like what?" I asked doubting that there was a ride that wasn't scary.

"You'll see. Besides, I do get you out of your comfort zone don't I?" My face went hot but it was true.

TJ grabbed my wrist and we ran towards the bumper cars. I guess there are things that aren't scary. When we got to the front of the line we picked our cars.

"You ready?" he asked with a smirk on his face. I nodded not letting my gaze leave his.

As the cars started I couldn't get the car to move. TJ thought me struggling was the funniest thing. When I finally got it moving he was still sitting there laughing. I ran into his car making him jump but also laugh harder. His laugh was so cute it made me laugh.

"Ok fine you won," I said as we left the bumper cars. He bumped into me as we walked. I knew he did it on purpose. It sent the butterflies into action. We played more games and ate some food. We got fried Oreos as we watched all the lights. As we watched all the people a chill went through me. We were sitting shoulder to shoulder on the bench by the baseball fields. TJ felt me shiver and look over at me. He took in my outfit before he pulled his sweatshirt over his head.

"Here, you're cold," he said sincerely.

"Thanks," I blushed, "Are you sure though? I don't want you to be cold."

"Yes, Cyrus," I liked the way he said my name, "I have two sweatshirts on."

"Why?" I laughed.

"It's the style," he said with a smile in his voice.

It was now dark out and the lights were bright. I was warm again and the smell of TJ was now on me.

"Ferris wheel?" he asked. I nodded as he took my wrist once again and pulled me towards the Ferris wheel. I took a deep breath as I looked up at the huge metal wheel above me.

"You're good," he reassured me. I smiled, "I know."

We sat next to each other on the metal seat. I placed my hands on the seat and sat up. I didn't want to lean on the seat too much. TJ could feel how tense I was.

"Don't worry, I'm here," he told me. I smiled at his words and relaxed. I felt like I couldn't blush anymore but somehow I did. We got to the top of the ride and stopped. The view was beautiful. All the lights were visible from here. I looked at TJ and he looked at me. The lights were shining in his eyes. They were beautiful. We both began to lean in. His face was less than an inch away from mine. I could feel his breath on my face. All of a sudden the Ferris wheel jolted into motion. We both pulled back with a jump. My stomach dropped and my head was a mess. He placed his hand over mine and I felt complete.

So, they almost kissed. Sorry, I left you at that. You'll just have to see what happens next. I loved writing this part. It was so much better than how I originally wrote this chapter. Let me know what you think so far!
