Alex got seated in her Biology class.

"Hey," Alex heard a voice come from her side.

"Hi," Alex replied nervously.

"Can I borrow a pen?" she asked. Alex handed her a pen with a small smile.

"I'm Marina by the way. You're new right?" she said.

"Uh, yeah. I'm Alex."

"You're very cute," Marina said, gleaming at Alex.

Alex, taken aback by the blunt compliment, stuttered, "Th-thank you. You're very pretty too." She was very pretty with her wavy brown hair, tied in a ponytail and a big smile plastered on her tan face showcasing her perfect white teeth. She was stunningly gorgeous.

The rest of the class, Alex spent staring at the clock- both longing for the class to end and dreading lunch time.

Alex walked into the cafeteria. It was a newer addition to school, with sleek white benches and tables. A line of tiny shops sold a combination of smoothies, sandwiches, desserts and drinks. Students were seated in their respective friend groups and a few loners were huddled in corners, completely immersed in their laptops. Deciding she'd also join the loners, she bought fries and an iced latté.

She opened her laptop up, ready to watch something when a pen popped up in her field of vision.

"You're not going to spend the entire lunch cooped up in the corner, watching YouTube and eating fries, are you?" Marina asked while waving around the pen in front of her face. Alex reached out and took it, recognizing that it was her pen that Marina had borrowed earlier.

Alex laughed nervously from the straightforward confrontation, "Maybe."

"Oh my god, you have to come sit with us. That's my friend Brooke and that's my boyfriend Clayton," Marina pointed at a pretty brunette and a tall, handsome jock already seated at a table close by. They both smiled at Alex and dimples appeared on both their faces. They both looked similar to which Alex concluded that they might be siblings. She later found out she was right.

"Let's go," said Alex, getting up and following Marina to the table.

"So, Alex, why change schools so suddenly?" Brooke asked, taking a bite of her burger.

"Uh... the old school just didn't fit me," Alex said, shrugging.

Marina reached for Clayton's fries and Clayton swatted her hands away.

"OUCH," Marina pouted and gave Clayton her best puppy eyes. Clayton plastered an annoyed look across his face.

"Order your own fries next time," Clayton said, but still he grudgingly slid his plate towards Marina.

"Yay!" Marina happily put her head on his shoulder as she popped a fry in her mouth.

"Ugh," Brooke rolled her eyes, "They're always like this."

"I think it's cute," said Alex. Clayton smiled brightly, obviously flattered by the comment.

"Have you ever dated anyone before?" asked Marina.

"Nope. Never," replied Alex.

"First kiss?" Brooke asked.

"If a middle school dare counts," Alex shrugged.

"I find that very hard to believe," said Marina.

Alex shifted in her seat uncomfortably. Wow. Am I that big of a loser?

"Why are you guys interrogating her?" Clayton interrupted, speaking through the food in his mouth.

"Close your mouth, Nasty," said Marina.

"Says the person who chewed my pen," Alex smirked.

Brooke raised her eyebrows and suppressed a laugh while Clayton blatantly sniggered.

"I can take it back if you want me to," Marina said, extending her hands out.

"I think I'll keep it anyway," said Alex, "It'll be an honor."

"Nice save," said Marina, "I'll see you around."

As if on queue, the school bell rang and students grudgingly moved out from the cafeteria.

Sarcasm saturated Brooke's words as she said monotonously, "Yay! I have math with Mr. Hastings."

"Hey! Me too," Alex said cheerily.

"You ought to get a tutor for math Brooke, I'm not even joking at this point," said Clayton.

"Yeah, I'll just find a tutor maybe next week or something. Off we go!" Brooke jumped up from her seat, locked her arms with Alex's and pulled Alex out of the cafeteria.

***

Alex spent most of the class focusing on making sure Brooke was awake than actually paying attention to Mr. Hastings. By the end of class, Alex was alone again, waiting outside the door as Brooke was called after class because Mr. Hastings "wanted to talk".

"What was that about?" asked Alex as Brooke stormed out of the classroom.

"He wants me to stay after school and get tutored by Colton Callaghan," Brooke groaned.

"I thought you wanted a tutor. Now you don't even have to look for one," said Alex, "Isn't that good?"

"Colton. Callaghan. It's Colton, Alex! Colton!" Brooke said as she vigorously shook Alex's shoulders.

"Stop," Alex groaned, "you're going to break my neck." Brooke chose to ignore the health concern as she look at Alex in panic, searching for some kind of reaction.

"Who's Colton anyway?" Alex said, nonchalantly, "And what's so bad about him?"

"Who is he? What's so bad?" Brooke exclaimed, "EVERYTHING IS BAD, ALEX. EVERYTHING."

Alex replied with a dumbfounded expression painted over her face.

"He's my next door neighbor," Brooke explained.

Alex scowled in disbelief, "How the hell am I supposed to know that?"

"Oh my god, Alex. I have spent more than 15 years keeping that horrible boy out of my life. And Mr. Hastings just slaps him onto me within 15 seconds? I mean, who does he think he is?" Brooke said.

"A math teacher who actually cares about your grades... ?" Alex shrugged.

"But obviously doesn't care about my mental and physical health!" Brooke exclaimed.

Alex sniggered at Brooke's remark, "C'mon, let's go find Marina."
