A/N: Prince Thunder is a character from one of my original stories. His brother (Crown Prince Flamefighter), and many others from the phoenix kingdom are part of a rebellion against a Flutterfly dictator in a magical world. (Flutterflies are magical humans who have wings.) In order to weaken the phoenixes' will in to join the rebellion, he burns down the castle where the royal family lives. While most of them escape, Prince Thunder does not. (In my version of phoenixes, they don't revive unless someone retrieves their ash-eggs and perform a special ritual to bring them back, memories and all.)

A feast had been prepared for the royal family. It was a small attempt to avert everyone in the castle's attention from the case of the crown prince's disappearance. Though many thoroughly disliked him, it was still a worrying matter for the entire kingdom. For his little brother, it was a harder in more ways than one. First of all, he was only four, too young to understand the implications of his missing brother. Secondly, his closest friend was his brother. His interactions with phoenixes his age were far and few between, only allowed to meet and hang out with the young sons of some nobility, but they were so stuck up and arrogant, no one stayed around them for long.
Prince Thunder attended the feast despite his turmoil of emotions. He was required to, anyway, so whether or not he was ready didn't matter. A few servants led the prince through the corridor when a flame materialized on a tapestry of a farm, depicting the story of the Great Blue Phoenix. It traced a path of flame downwards and out to the sides. Thunder stepped back in surprise, thinking "That wasn't supposed to happen, everything in the castle was impervious to phoenix fire!"
From that single flame, several thread objects were soon hot ash. The servants leading him nudged him towards an exit and he quickly followed. They were nearly safe — until the prince accidentally brushed his tail against the fire. It quickly crawled up his spine, a tiny, scalding, and dancing assassin, white-yellow fingers weaving in an incomprehensible pattern. His nerves had barely just registered the burning pain when his heart stopped.
