The Death of Rustfur

A/N: Rustfur is one of my OCs from the Erin Hunters' "Warriors" series. Warriors is about wild cats who live in a forest with four clans, their way of life, and the adventures and misadventures of a bunch of different cats. It's a very complicated and long series, so my summary did no justice to it, but whatever.

    For the last twelve moons, Rustfur's life had taken several turns which he could have never suspected. First, his mother decided to take care of a kit he found in the forest. Then, when that kit came of age, the kit was apprenticed him. Soon after, his mother turned out to not be his mother at all. In an even shorter amount of time, he found that his mother was the same as his apprentice's mother, making them brothers. The previous deputy suggested re-assigning Eaglepaw (the kit) a mentor to Marigoldstar, believing his reports on Eaglepaw's performance to be full of bias since they were brothers.
    Marigoldstar had taken special interest in Eaglepaw since he was only a kit, and took him as his own apprentice. Only a few days after Eaglepaw became a warrior (Eaglefeather), the former deputy died. Marigoldstar found she did not fully trust anyone as much she did Eaglefeather, and made him deputy, though he was young and had not taken on a apprentice. Sadly, a huge battle broke out between the cats of the Clan: those who supported the decision, and those who would not tolerate the violation of the warrior code.
    Many cats died, but most notable was the leader herself. Eaglefeather, just barely beyond being an apprentice, was now Eaglestar — and who better to choose as a deputy than his own brother? For the last moon or so, Rustfur had been the busiest cat he knew, especially after the harsh season of leaf-bare hit them. He sent out warriors for hunting so often there was barely ever anyone left to go on patrols.
    And yet through all this, he'd never ever expected to just... die. Just as sudden as the death of a mouse, just as insignificant, he'd been left for dead on the Thunderpath. As the last bits of life seeped out of him, he hoped his brother would continue on much longer than their previous leader had after her deputy died.
