Midoriya was somehow able to get to school only three minutes late. His teacher, when he walked in, looked at him strangely. He wasn't the type to be late for class, even by a few minutes, and especially not on a day with a big even like today. But that isn't his to question. He marked him tardy, then began talking about the rules for the festival.
"I want all of you to at least try. It doesn't matter if you don't get past the first round, have fun out there!"
Izuku stayed silenced even through the chorus of "Plus Ultra!" that rang through the halls of the school. He had plenty of time last night to think, and he'd decided to try his best. For Shinso and Hatsume, of course. His two friends, and his mother, were the only real reason he was still at U.A. and not, say, some random jail cell.
"Alright everyone! Go get your gym uniforms on, then meet up outside the stadium!" The teacher yelled over the students, who were all running downstairs already.
Izuku, on the other hand, didn't see a reason to hurry, especially when he saw Shinso hanging back to talk to him. He smiled, and jogged over.
"Hey Shinso!"
"Hey, Midoriya," Shinso's gaze wandered to Izuku's bandaged neck. "You alright?"
"Oh! Yeah, that, don't worry! I'm fine! It's just a few scratches!"
"On your neck?"
"Yes?"
Shinso, understandably, was confused as all hell. "What happened?"
"I- It was an accident..." Izuku paused, unsure of what to say next.
"And?"
"Well, uh, there may or may not have been a blade involved..." Not the truth, not a lie. But it was still more than he'd originally wanted to share.
"Oh shit. Are you okay?" Concern was plastered on his face, exactly why Izuku didn't want to tell anyone.
"I told you, I'm fine."
"No, like, actually." The two were starting to near the gym's overcrowded locker rooms.
"I said I'm fine. Completely fine. I'm not going to die from just a scratch."
Silence between the two fell as they went inside, and continued as they went on their way to the stadium. On the way, Hatsume had seemed to be looking for them.
"Izuku! Shinso! There you are!"
"Hey Hatsume!"
"Hey, Hatsume, look who's gotten himself injured yet again," Shinso says as he rolls his eyes, all concern from minutes ago hidden.
"Oh! Izuku, what happened this time?" Her face showed the same pity and concern Shinso's did.
"Nothing, really! I- It was an accident! I'm fine now!"
"Really? Alright, then. Take it easy, though, when we're competing. We wouldn't want our precious Izuku to get more hurt, would we?" She teased.
"I'm not sure how to respond to that, so I'm just not going to."
A few chuckles came from the others, but stopped almost as soon as they had started. Their gazes focused on the road ahead of them. They had arrived at the stadium.
