Today was the day.
Today was the day she was getting married to Bea. She had spent months half-heartedly planning the wedding with the help of Vanie.
Thankfully it was only going to be a somewhat small wedding. The only people that would be there was Bea's parents and some of their mutual friends.
"You'd better hurry up and get dressed! You don't want to be late for your own wedding now do you?" she heard Vanie say in a teasing tone.
"I guess not." She muttered.
"What's the matter? This should be the happiest day of your life. Are you nervous? It's O.K. to be nervous. It's a big day for you.
But Bea loves you and I'm sure you will have a wonderful life together." Vanie said in one excited breath as she came up behind her and gave her a hug.
With tears in her eyes she went to the closet and pulled the gown out.
-------
She stood in the front door of the church waiting for the music to begin playing. Vanie turned back and smiled at her and she smiled back.
She stared at the white roses in her hands. She vowed to herself that she would forget about Deanna and give her whole heart to Bea. She would be the best wife she could be to her.
The music started playing and Vanie began walking down the aisle.
When vanie had reached the front of the church and taken her place the music became louder in her ears and she stepped in the doors.
Everyone turned to stare at her. She stared straight-ahead not looking at anyone except the minister at the front of the church.
Her eyes betrayed her though and went to the person standing next to Bea. - Deanna. When she saw her she was staring at her with sadness in her gray eyes.
She looked at her and she smiled. She turned her gaze back to the minister and continued the walk. When she got to the front she turned to face Bea.
She lifted her veil up and she saw her eyes glistening with tears of happiness. She gave her a small smile and the minister began her speech.
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered together here in the sight of God, and in the face of this company, to join together this Woman and Woman in holy Matrimony.
She listened to the speech and stared at Bea, wondered what she was thinking.
"If any person can show just cause, why they may not lawfully be joined together, let him/her speak now, or else hereafter for ever hold her/his peace."
"I do!" she heard from behind Bea. It was Deanna.
"I love this woman and I know she loves me."
"Deanna! What on earth are you doing?! Are you out of your mind?" She heard Zoe hiss. She watched as Deanna tried to get past Bea but Zoe held her back.
"Zoe let me go!"
Bea stared at her with such sadness in her eyes, "Is it true? Do you love her?"
She looked down at her roses, "Yes." The tears spilled from her eyes. "I'm so sorry Bea. I really am."
Bea turned from her and ran to the back of the church.
"Bea!! Wait! Please! Let me explain!"
Bea ignored her pleas and opened the door to the church and ran out.
Jessica felt Deanna beside her. Everyone stared at them with disbelief written on their faces. She heard Zoe mutter, "Well, that went well."
Vanie stepped in front of her, "Everyone if you will just excuse Jessica and Deanna, there has been a misunderstanding.
If everyone will just wait right here I'm sure we'll be able to get it all straightened out and the wedding will continue." Vanie looked back and mouthed "Go!" Jessica and Deanna ran up the aisle and out the door. They walked around the church and found Bea leaning against a tree in the back smoking a cigarette.
"Why didn't you tell me?" she muttered.
"I didn't know how. I wanted to but I just couldn't seem to bring myself to do it." She said looking at her. "You hate me don't you?"
"Hate you? I could never hate you. I love you too much. You should know that." She dropped the cigarette butt down on the ground.
"I'm so sorry about everything Bea. I really am. I never meant to hurt you." She wiped the tears from her eyes. "I love you. I really do. I'm just not in love with you"
"I know. I saw it coming a long while back. I saw the way you and Deanna kept looking at each other. The secret glances between you two." She pulled another cigarette out and lit it. "I just refused to believe it."
She looked at Jessica and Deanna. "I want you to be happy Jessica. That's all I want.
If you want to go with Deanna instead of me that's fine. Although, I must admit it does hurt. It hurts like hell, but it's just the way things are, I guess. Some things just happen and there's not a damn thing you can do about it."
"Bea," She murmured. Before she could finish she heard her mutter.
"Well, you better get in there. Those people are expecting a wedding. You don't want to disappoint them do you?"
"But Bea."
"Go."
She felt Deanna tugging on her arm. She pulled herself free and went up to Bea and threw her arms around her.
"Thank you." She whispered into her ear. "Thank you for being so sweet to me." She kissed her on the cheek and walked back to Deanna.
And together they walked towards inside the church. And the Wedding Ceremony continued..
