Five years after the disaster of the RMS Titanic and three years into The Great War, WWI...
Vimy Ridge, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France
NARRATOR'S POV
As aforementioned, it is in fact five years after the disastrous Titanic sinking and three years into the war. The Titanic's maiden voyage was exciting to be on at first, but then of course disaster struck at precisely twenty to midnight in the façade of an iceberg, which then led to the sinking of the grandest ship of her time and many deaths of many innocent passengers, roughly 1500 were lost and an estimated amount of 700-705 were rescued at sea the following morning by the Cunard liner, RMS Carpathia. I was amongst those lucky few who were rescued from the water, alongside my husband Deryck and our friends Jason and David, unfortunately our friend Stephen who was the drummer of their band "Sum 41" perished in the disaster and now there was only Deryck, David and Jason left.
Let me take you back five years ago - Oh wait! No time for that, I better go and answer whoever's at the front door. I should also mention that, Deryck, David and Jason ('Cone', rather) are fighting in the war at the minute, so every time the door goes I get anxious and prepare for the worse, that my Deryck has been killed whilst on the frontline. I then go to the door to answer, and who should I find waiting on the other side? None other than Jay and Dave!. What are they doing back so early? Where's Deryck? He should be with them, surely? Oh, no what if something's happened to him? Is that why they're here? What's going on?!. I frantically and worriedly questioned in my head. I then came out of my train of thought, and asked Jay:"Where's Deryck? He should be with you, shouldn't he?"
"That's why we're here actually, something's happened to him, Hannah. It's not serious in terms of him being dead, but what happened was... When we were in the trenches the enemy threw in bombs in order to attack us not just by gunfire, and unfortunately one went off near Deryck and we were told that due to the noise of the blast, the doctors and nurses had said that he has become sensorineural deaf in both ears and will have major issues with shell shock because of it. I'm really sorry, Hannah - we both are. We can take you to see him if you want" Jay explained in detail. I stood motionless for what seemed like forever, obviously in a state of shock after hearing this devastating news; I mean I should at least be thankful that I'm not receiving the news that Deryck's been killed in action, he's going to live at least but it was still a lot to take in at this particular moment in time. I then got the courage (although not a lot) to ask Jay:
"How severe is the shell shock?"
"We weren't told, because once we found out about the bomb and the shell shock we decided to go and tell you straight away. So, I'm not sure how severe it'll be, hopefully not too bad"
"Yeah, hopefully" I replied weakly out of worry.
I've been waiting for something for so long
To show me the answers that I want
A reason to believe in that's so strong
But I don't think that it existsI've been waiting for something for so long
To show me the answers that I want
A reason to believe in that's so strong
But I don't think that it existsYeah, give me reason to believe
This world's not a sick machine,
When everywhere's a dead end in every direction
Yeah, can you give me what I need
Or just sit and watch me bleed?
'Cause after all, you can't get everything you want now
But all I would need is one thing to keep me moving onEverybody's got a secret, can you tell me what is mine?
Can you tell me what you'd find, I'll tell you if you keep it
I promise not to lie, ooohWell, I have the fears, the pain and the tears I just can't hide
It all disappears 'cause everything passes with the time
All you need is reason to believe.
