My classmates were so good at government that I felt like an olodo. If the teacher had asked me questions, I won't be able to answer.I would have to read a government textbook during break. It wasn't even short break and the class was already noisy.
"oya o who's ready" Alex screamed as he began to hit his desk, producing beats from the rusty desk.
"Agege wa oo talo ka pata iya teacher Lo ni ibadan ijo lanike jo te lo n fa bi apon ijo zanku re ma so pe o da mo ati omode ati agbalagba ma lo da mo ko n"Alex sang screaming
"you guys should not start abeg" harmony begged. But her begging wasn't enough as half the class shouted
"Gbe body eh
GBE body eh..Zanku leg work.... Zanku leg work"Her eyes shot arrows at Alex and he winked at her, ayo took over from the drumming and Alex came out dancing zanku in front of harmony who although felt like she liked it hissed and turned away.
adunni too was screaming as she tried to do the zanku dance. Wale and Tobi weren't even paying attention to the class their minds were on a comic book they were both reading.
The way they all acted made me remember the village, my former classmates acted this way only these ones were more tush. I shook my head in amazement. So all these Lagos children did so too.
"zanku leg work-
"what's going on here" the literature teacher came in. All activities stopped, he smiled and his bright white teeth sparkled.
"there's no argument when I say Alex started this -the class went into laughter - so leave my class Alex.... Tell the principal what you started." the literature teacher said and wrote 'vanity's on the board.
Alex stood up and left the class along with the science students who weren't offering literature.
"I'm convinced you all have studied the poem written on the board.. so this is a discussion class"
I scratched my head and my heart began to race.. please don't call me.... please don't call me I prayed.
"new student........ Asake? What do you feel about the poem?" he asked.
My lord.
________
Tobi's government textbook sat on my desk as I read my eyes out. I felt so embarrassed how come I couldn't even answer a single question straight.
The literature was just tormenting.. I owe my pride to ebube who just took the question as his. Even now as I watched him walk into the class laughing with Elvis I felt so ashamed.
He turned to me and my eyes fell back to the book... Lord help me. He was walking towards my seat and I felt the urge to run away.
A bottle of chilled fanta met with my table and a gala placed on my -tobi's actually - Government textbook. I looked up to ebube's smiling face.
"hey" he said and I awkwardly waved.
"you're reading so hard so I decided to get you something to eat since you forgot it was break"He spoke feeling so proud of himself.
Should I refuse? But it's fanta and gala O...
I smiled and wrap my fingers around the fanta. "wow it's so cold " I spoke with wide grateful eyes.
"yup" he said. "this is the perfect combination, how did you know?" I said opening the bottle of fanta and taking a gulp.
"you always take it so I figured that you like it" he said taking a seat next to me.
"oh, thank you" I said with a genuine smile. Just then adunni walked in holding a bag of potatoes chips an she crunched the chips loudly.
"eehyah, you guys Alex's mum is in school ..the principal called her" she said. She turned to stare at I and ebube then she shook her head and walked to her seat.
"Wazobia FM, amebo, why are you na telling us" faith spoke as she turned to adunni.
"come o, carry your witchery away from here o.. Was I talking to you" adunni said as she stood up ready for war.
"adunni, must you reply" I said surprising myself.
"are you putting mouth in what's not your matter? " faith asked and I rolled my eyes.
This girl loved fight and it was just a waste of time talking or exchanging words with her.
"Abeg carry your rubbish away" I spoke turning to my government textbook.
"wow" ebube spoke from beside me.
"what" I turned to him, I knew what he was going to say.
"so you can talk? " he asked with a chuckle and I smiled and rolled my eyes."I swear in my next life there's no class captain anything for me o.. I Don tire... Asake the literature teacher is calling you " harmony said walking sluggishly to her seat.
"okay" I said as I closed the textbook and put the snacks under my locker.
"should I come with you? " ebube asked.
"is it you the teacher wants to see" adunni lashed out as she stared at him with wide eyes.
"come what's your problem" ebube asked. I stood up and rolled my eyes as they began throwing insults at themselves. Tobi entered the class with the same bored look he always had on.
"Tobi, see this one wants to start toasting our sister o" adunni screamed and Tobi stared at us and threw a copy of the comic he was holding at Ebube.
"which person sister" Tobi said walking to ebube laughing. "you came to toast girl abi" he jokingly asked ebube who stood up to run.
I rolled my eyes and walked out. I pushed the base of my hair from my face as I rubbed my sweaty palms on my skirt. What did the teacher want anyway?.
I ran down the stairs towards the teachers office. it was a bit far from the classrooms and this was the reason why most of them came late to class, well except the maths teacher who will never miss a class. the junior classes and the tuck shop were located In this part of the school too.
"all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy? Which type of rubbish is that?" a voice yelled from the bottom stairs three steps from me.
I walked closer to the turn where the stairs was. " stop screaming like that" another voice spoke but this time it was more feminine.
"see just be going you're vexing me" the voice spoke and I peeped to see the people.
Amebo won't kill me.
"don't you want to come home?, no one's home" a light skinned woman spoke. She was beautiful and slim, the red lipstick she wore fit perfectly with the black gown she wore.
"leave me alone" it was Alex speaking and the woman was probably his mum.
"are you still angry, I only said that because I wanted to support you" she said pouting.
"did I send you?.. Are you meant to be supporting me in school like that? " he spoke angrily as he folded his arms and rested on the rail of the stairs.
Was he talking to his mom like that? Try it with mummy asake first... You would have received slap that would send you to the grave.
"let's go home hmm" she spoke reaching for his hand.
"you're horny again?.... see madam my school is more important than your sex life" he said and my heart stopped.
"alex why are you like this now? " she spoke and he hissed and turned to the pillar where I hid and his eyes met mine.
I gasped as a hand drew me backwards.
