Before I started to actually participate in bdsm I wondered the exact same thing. Naturally I'm a very dominant person so I assumed that I was a dom but in the back of my mind I always knew I was a sub but was afraid to admit it. I am currently a switch!
The truth is u don't need to know, it's the same as when teachers tell u to pick a career in high school. You don't need to know life just chooses for you. However, if for some reason it's important for you and u have no way to actually participate I recommend reading or watching bdsm and just try and see what prospective appeals to you the most. Maybe even try spanking yourself? Or maybe spank a teddy? Try other bdsm things by yourself and just see.
