12:00 a.m.

He calls.

Her: Hey Luke!

Him: So about what you said last time...

Her: Huh? What did I say?

Him: You said...

Her: I said?

Him: That uh.

Her: Luuuke.

Him: You love me??

Her: [laughs] Oh that.

Him: [blushing on his side of the phone]

Her: I was just excited and super happy. And I just unconsciously ended the call like that. You know how you end a call with your brother or something?

Him: ...

Her: ?

Him: ...

Her: ...

Him: Oh. A brother. Great.

Her: Yeah, don't worry about me actually loving you. I wouldn't be calling you like this if I did.

Him: You mean you would talk to me in person?

Her: No silly! I would just not talk to you at all until those feelings went away!

Him: So there's no chance of meeting you.

Her: I guess.

Him: You guess?! What the hell Mysty?!

Her: What?! What did I even do??!

Him: Everything?! What if I want to meet you?! What if I want to hold you?!-

Her: Hold?

Him: Forget I said that part. But what if I want to get to know you?!

Her: You're just going to be disappointed in who you find me to be.

Him: I would never be.

Her: If I'm already disappointed with myself. If my parents are already disappointed with me. If the guy I like is already disappointed with me. How are you supposed to not be?

Him: Because I'm different from them.

Her: Everyone's the same in some way.

Him: Let me show you that it's not the case.

Her: Fine.

Him: Just let me know you.

Her: ...

Him: Mysty?

Her: I'll let you know some things. I have insomnia. There. That's why I'm always up late.

Him: Really?

Her: [laughs] that's the best response you have to me opening up?

Him: I'm sorry, I actually couldn't think of what to say.

Her: [laughs] It's ok. And the reason why I started calling you was because you helped me fall asleep. You were the only thing that helped. I knew that because... Never mind.

Him: You said that's the reason why you started calling me. But what about now?

Her: I guess there's just something in me that likes talking to you.

Him: Ditto.

Her: Ditto?

Him: You know li-

Her: [laughs] Of course I know.

Him: Then.

Her: It's just such a weird thing to say.

Him: I'm weird.

Her: I know you are.

Him: But then what are you?

Her: Hm. I'm lonely.

Him: Mysty...

Her: But not when I'm talking to you.

Him: ...

Her: ...

Him: Then I'll never let you be lonely again. Every single damn night.

Her: Thank you Luke, thank you so fucking much.

She hangs up.

And so practically every night for the next three months they talked at precisely midnight. They laughed, cried, and shared precious moments to one another, learning who each of them claimed to be. Sometimes people don't have to see one another to become attachted.

But of course, not everything can be told over the phone.
