I woke up to Zach shaking my shoulder. "Oh, hi." I said drowsily. "Would you mind keeping watch for a little bit? I'm exhausted!" He looked like he was going to drop dead. "Sure." I said, sitting up. "Thanks." He mumbled, collapsing onto his make-shift bed. I rubbed my eyes and stood up. I looked over at my phone. 5:00 AM. The first rays of sunlight were just peeking over the tops of the trees. I sat down at the foot of a nearby oak tree and sighed. Now it was official: We were on the run. Fugitives, hiding our identities, trying to escape our old lives. Where do we go now? Zach's words echoed, fresh in my mind. I pushed those thoughts aside. I would think about that later. Now I should focus on getting breakfast. I was just about to get up, when I heard a rustling in the forest. I looked around. Probably just a chipmunk. I thought. A few seconds passed when all of a sudden, I heard a sneeze. Chipmunks don't sneeze. I got up and grabbed a large stick off the ground. "Zach!" I muttered, nudging him in the shoulder with my foot. "Wha?" He mumbled, looking around drowsily. "Someone's here!" I whispered. He focused for a minute before laying back down. "I don't read anyone." "Someone's here, I swear!" He rolled over. "No one's here-" All of a sudden, a teenage girl stepped into the clearing. Zach and I scrambled to our feet. The girl had blonde wavy hair, and her eyes were a soft sea green. She looked extremely familiar... "Who are you?" I demanded, gripping my stick. "Um, I-I..." She stuttered, taking a couple steps back. The girl was wearing eyeliner and mascara, and she had on a crop top, ripped skinny jeans and stilettos. She might as well have been going to the mall. Why did she look like I had seen her somewhere before? "I said, who are you?" I repeated. The girl paled. "Um, I'm Eve. D-Don't you remember?" All of a sudden I realized where I had seen her before. "You're that girl I saved." I remembered. She nodded, some of the colour returning to her face. "I wanted to thank you..." She paused to take a breath. I tightened my grip on the stick in my hand. She obviously didn't come all this way just so say thank you. "...But I also needed to ask you something." She looked down at her feet, as if she was going to admit some kind of big secret. "I'm not normal. I... I have powers like you guys, and, well, I was wondering if I could come with you...?" Wait, what? "Sure!" Zach replied immediately. I looked over at him. What was wrong with him? We met this girl, what, five seconds ago, and Zach just wants to believe every word that comes out of her mouth? What if she wants to turn us in? "Um, Zach, can I talk to you privately for a minute?" I gritted my teeth. "Okay." Zach, following me to a corner of the clearing. Why did he seem so careless all of a sudden? What happened to him? "What has gotten into you?" I asked. "Nothing." He said, nonchalantly. "I just want to help her out, that's all." I groaned. "But how are we supposed to know if she's telling the truth?" "Well, I trust her." Zach said, shrugging. I stared at him. He looked like he was asleep. I snapped my fingers in front of his face. "Helloooo. Wake up." All of a sudden, his nonchalance morphed into anger. He narrowed his eyes. "Look Nicky. If you don't want to help her, fine. But I do. Maybe, we'll just go off by ourselves and leave you here, see how you like it. I can't believe you are so evil! I hate you!" He said angrily, turning to return to Eve. "No, wait!" I said, desperately. I grabbed him by the shoulder and turned him around. Was this the kind of person he thought I was? I thought, feeling tears welling in my eyes. "She can come." I said, quietly. He grunted. I wiped away my tears and walked back to the clearing with him. "You can come, but first we need to see you use your powers." I said, my voice hollow. The scene kept replaying in my mind. "I can't believe you are so evil! I hate you!" "Okay." Said Eve, snapping me back to the present. I watched her focus for a second, when all of a sudden, she disappeared. "See?" She said, picking up a stick and waving it around, making it look like it was flying around by itself. I nodded vacantly. Was I being too careful? Maybe I should loosen up... No. Who am I kidding? Our lives are in danger! We can't just go around letting random people we meet off the street come along too. If Zach doesn't realize that, then that's his problem. All of a sudden, I realized that Zach was talking to me. "Nicky?" "Sorry, what?" I said, returning to the present. "So, can she come?" Zach gave me a look showing that this wasn't really an actual question. "Yeah, yeah." I muttered, turning away. Wait a minute, I realized. Was Zach being so protective of Eve because he has a crush on her?! All of a sudden, I felt like my heart had been dropped into a pit of acid. Is it really possible that...?Wait- Why did I care? ...did I like Zach? I shut those thoughts down. This was not the time to get involved in my love life. "Eve, want to take first watch?" I heard Zach offer behind me. I would let Mrs. Angel here join my group, but no way was I going to let her watch over me while I was sleeping. "No, it's okay." I said, turning around and flashing Zach a look of disapproval. "Well, umm, are you sure?" She offered. "Oh yeah." I said, glaring at Zach. "Oh. Umm, okay." Said Eve, obviously taken aback by my response. "Do you mind if I use your bed?" She asked, basically already under the covers. I rolled my eyes. "No, not at all." I muttered. "Thanks." I heard her murmur as she drifted off to sleep. I sat down and stared at the dirt ground. Now I had two people in my hands, two people who I was responsible for, wether I liked it or not. I had no idea where we were going to go next, or where we were going to live. Plus, on top of all this, the we are the number one wanted group by the FBI. I sighed. How did I ever get wrapped up in this?
