The faint sound of the TV could be heard from my room. I groan as I push my chair away from my computer table and stand up, stretching. I make my way downstairs and press the power button on the TV.
The doorbell rings.
Lucky timing.
I kick things out of my path and into hidden places as I shuffle to the door. I look through the peephole to see the most beautiful being ever.
I quickly fumble for the doorknob and manage it to open. I glance at my sister, Teresa, asleep on the couch that'd formerly been watching TV. I turn to the door and open it all the way, revealing the magnificent beast.
"Hello?" I croak to him.
Yes. Him. There a problem? Yeah. Didn't think so.
He smiles sheepishly and hands me a white box.
"I'm your new neighbor, I live across the street."
I yawn.
"Your name please.... Sir?" My words are slurred from a lack of sleep. "And a reason why you are here in the middle of the night?"
He laughs uneasily, almost like he's asking permission to laugh. I can't help but smile. He's so... Awkward. And it's kinda.... Cute.
"Name's Newt. I just got back from work, so, thought I'd pay you a visit." He shrugs, like it's no big deal, but I see the slight tint in his cheeks. A tint of red. I can't tell if he's embarrassed or blushing.
"Well, come in! Heavens sake, you must be goddamned freezing out there!" I open the door wider, a big enough space for Newt to fit through.
I scan my living room, looking for any trash or dirty clothes.
Teresa.
I hold up a finger to Newt, signaling for a moment. I hop to the living room and pick her up, one arm under her legs and the other under her neck.
She snickers, scaring the living day lights out of me.
"Oh my god- Teresa! Shut up!"
I whisper-shout at her, while making my way up the stairs.
"This ones cute." She says, not moving except for her mouth. It was actually kinda creepy.
"Shut up! Shut up shut up shut up! Teresa, he doesn't like me okay? Like... Like me. 'Sure he's straight, and we'll be friends, and I'll get over him." I sigh. "Besides. A guy like him, isn't going to like a guy like me."
After that, no one said a word. I set Teresa on her bed and rushed down the stairs to see Newt again. I gave him a nervous smile and neared him.
"Hey."
He nods.
"Girlfriend?"
I laugh.
"Hell no. Sister."
He nods, and when I look into his eyes I can see that they'd been released of worry and jealousy. I could see that in his eyes. People call me crazy, being able to sense emotions by eyes, but then again, sometimes me and Teresa swear we her each other's thoughts.
So I basically had to tell her everything about me so she wouldn't play it the hard way.
I pulled a chair from my dining table and usher Newt to sit. He obeys and I go to get us each a glass of soy milk. When I come back with the glasses and he takes a sip, I notice a slight smile curl his lips together.
"Soy milk?" He asks.
I nod, hiding my face, as it's red from embarrassment.
"I'm, uh, lactose intolerant."
He laughs, setting down his milk glass and out stretching his hands on the table.
"I gots problems wit' da bloody Gluten, ya 'no?" He replies, no sarcasm at all, but still funny shit.
I giggle.
Only a few more centimeters until our hands touched...
No. Stop it. It's never going to happen.
"Hey, what's in the box you gave me?" I ask, suddenly anxious to change the subject.
"Oh.. Just, wait until I'm gone to open it. I usually work until late at night, so if you ever wanted to hang out you could either wait 'till twelve or meet me at the bloody coffee shop."
"It doesn't sound too friendly if it's bloody." I say, matte of factly.
"No- I just- I-I-"
I laugh at his awkwardness. It really is hilarious, the way he says it with his accent. Also kind of adorable. Makes me want to wrap him in my arms and hold him tight.
"Newt, wanna watch TV? I mean, I know it's late, but I'm kinda...." I trailed off, not meeting his gaze. But I realized I couldn't- only because he wasn't there. He was on the couch, fiddling with the remote. I laugh as I press the power button on the TV and lay down on the couch. Newt lays down the same way as me, just on the opposite side.
Before I know it, my eyelids anchor over my eyes and I lose myself into sleep.
