The Characters Part 1:

They are so many characters in these books, for the main part of that in your life there are so many people you do interact with I wanted to be realistic.  Being realistic was actually a main goal of my story that was many objective of my story, I like reading different stories but I often think that would never happen in real life.  So I wanted to write story based on things that would actually happen, yeah there is drama in your life, but not so much like some stories I read.

Calie:

My favvvvvv character, mostly for the reason she’s me.

Is she 100% me? No but she was still easy to write.

Unfortunately she might be a little too like a lot of other teenage girls, but I didn’t want to stray from myself.

She might seem nice but really she’s judgmental, snarky, and a couple other character flaws but I think I portray it well, someone once told me Calie’s thoughts are what you want to say in real life.   (But you often end of thinking it your head)

Calie does a lot of growing up in the book, earlier you might think she portrays a girl who could be in their young teens rather than late teens, I think this comes from her internally as she looks young, and didn’t have many friends in her old school, no guys were ever interested in her, etc.

I think she puts up a front of not liking people when she first meets them. She put that into overdrive with Derek.  When she meets someone completely unlike her, it’s hard for her to like them. She is too nice though to act cruel towards Derek, she prefers to keep it in her thoughts.

(A little advice if you want to actually write a long story base your main character on you, a lot of time I have difficulty finishing stories because I don’t feel connected to the main character but if you base them on yourself you won’t have this problem)

Derek:

Derek holds a special place in my heart basically because I just love his character so much.

I originally wanted to write a male teenage character that wasn’t the typically arrogant player or sensitive guy you see in teen fiction.

Like I mentioned before he was originally going to be completely based on this guy I knew that annoyed me when I first met but ended up liking, but I didn’t know enough about him to completely base Derek off him so I made up a lot of stuff.

All Derek does in the beginning of the story is act himself and Calie completely tears him apart in her head.  Poor Derek has no clue, but then again he probably wouldn’t care.  He doesn’t notices how you react to him or he doesn’t care how you react to him.

Background on younger Derek:

Derek’s had a very easy life, financial, his parents make a lot of money, so I don’t think he understands money completely, it’s more of something to be spent.

On the other hand, Derek has had a lot of supervision parental, his parents work a lot so this allows him to do whatever he wants.  He doesn’t have a lot of family around either.

His maternal grandparents are the only family in the area he has and they are very prim and proper and Derek can’t relate to them at all.  He doesn’t like the politics of politics at all, he rather distant himself and make of it instead of trying to go with it.

When Derek was younger, he was made fun of quite a bit, he wasn’t good at sharing, he was more into himself than anyone else. Luckily he’s had Jeff, who has been his friend for quite some time, Calie doesn’t understand the Jeff and Derek relationship completely mostly because she never had a friend that long, and I think the guy relationship is actually hard for girls to understand, but Derek completely trust Jeff with his life.  (I’ll go more into Jeff’s Character when I get to him)
