Beverly breathed out a sigh of relief, "I think I like Bill," she said.
"That's so great.. I was so worried it was Richie,"
"YOU LIKE RICHIE?" Beverly nearly choked on the lemonade she'd been sipping,
Lolly raised her hands up palm forward, "You got me' style. The two friends started laughing, and they couldn't stop. This simple conversation would've saved both parties so much pre-dance worrying.
"I really liked you before, but I like you even more now that I know you don't like Richie," Lolly joked
"Stop it," Beverly shook her head, "Are you going to tell him?"
"Maybe if we ever figure everything out, between Henry and Bill seeing Georgie the other day.. I don't know if there will ever be a right time,"
"There's never going to be a right time. If it's not Henry, it'll be something else,"
"We should get back to our dates," Lolly playfully nudged Beverly, "I did promise Stan a dance, maybe you should dance with Bill, just for fun, while I dance with Stan.."It was a weight off the shoulders of Beverly and Lolly that they weren't in a contest for any boys' affection. Wandering back to their group of Losers', they noticed Henry and Patrick were already there.
"This is it," Lolly whispered to Beverly and continued to walk over. The conversation stopped when they got closer.
Henry had semi-adhered to the semi-formal dress code; he wore a plaid shirt with rolled-up sleeves tucked into a pair of jeans. Patrick wore his everyday clothes, black jeans, and a grey tank-top.
Okay, be nice. Henry's just a guy. He's just a guy.
"You look nice tonight Henry," Lolly said dryly, the corners of her mouth turned up slightly and weakly.
All of her friends looked at her like she'd spectacularly grown a second head, Richie mouthed a quick, "What the fuck?" in the direction.
Before Henry could respond Lolly spoke again,
"Is there something I can help you with?"
"You're dancing with me," Henry answered
Patrick was busy making Eddie uneasy with a lighter and a can of hairspray.
"That's so sweet of you to ask!" Lolly smiled with more force this time, "Although I did promise someone else a dance first, so if you want to come ba-"
"How about you dance with me first? And then I can decide if you want to come back to these losers,"
This is going well, I mean he hasn't done anything rash yet. One dance can't hurt?
"Well, okay, just one song," She held out her hand and Henry's hand clasped over it eagerly.
"Patrick, why don't you find someone to dance with too? " She called out over her shoulder, attempting to steer the bully away from Eddie's scared eyes.
She noticed Patrick stalking off in the other direction before directing her attention back to Henry.
An upturned nose, an awful mullet, and sandy blonde hair. Henry stood taller than all of The Losers' Club but once the club members hit their growth spurts, Lolly was sure Henry would be short in comparison. A slow song Lolly had never heard of played over the warm summer air and groups of two flooded the dance floor. Henry pulled her close, and put two hands on her hips. Lightly, she placed her palms down on his shoulders. The lack of restraint from Lolly confused Henry, she'd been so blunt with him before and he was looking forward to a bit of confrontation. Although he wasn't going to complain about things going his way.
"You look nice tonight," Lolly repeated, "I like the uh- sleeves,"Henry's signature look this summer had been t-shirts with the sleeves ripped off to create makeshift tanktops.
"You like it, sweetheart? I dressed up for you, and you sure did dress up for me,"
He eyed the neck of her dress like a dog who'd seen a steak covered in peanut butter.
Lolly mentally kicked herself a little bit for getting into this situation with Henry, again.
Should I break-up with him? I mean, we're not dating, but he thinks we are? Does he? He called me his girlfriend before. Is that how to handle this?
"Technically, I'm here with one of my other friends, but I'm enjoying our dance,"
She braced herself and moved slightly closer to Henry, it took a lot of mental coaxing not to hold her breath while she did so.
"I thought I told you that you were going with me,"
"It's a girls choice dance, that's not really how it works,"
Henry moved a hand from her waist and up to her chin, running his fingers against the length of her body. He put his thumb underneath her chin and pointed it up to bring her gaze directly to his eyes.
"Did you forget that you belong to me?"
Lolly's skin prickled as she remembered the voice she'd heard in her bathroom weeks before. The reflection of the clown, Henry in her closet.
"I-I think we should just be friends," She whispered
"I don't think you heard me,"
Henry stroked her face with two fingers and leaned in close like he was going to kiss her on the mouth.
The Losers' Club watched on from a few feet over, they'd hovered close by since Lolly had walked off with Bowers. Stanley had emphasized how bad of an idea it was to leave them alone, and nobody disagreed. Richie held Beverly back from ripping Henry's hands off Lolly as soon as he had touched her chin, "Just wait for a second fire-crotch, let's see what happens,".
As Henry moved closer to Lolly a fire started in Beverly's blood, "We're not waiting anymore, we have to do something,".
