Three Losers at a booth table inside of Angel's Pizza sipping on soda; Bill, Richie, and Stan laughed over greasy slices. Richie wore his classic toothy smile, but anxiety kicked back and forth in his head like a soccer ball. He wanted to relay the information of what a great friend he'd been to Stan, but to do that, he'd also have to tell him that Lolly had a crush on him. On one hand, he really thought Stan deserved to know because maybe it would be the push he needed to ask Lolly out. On the other hand, he wasn't sure if Lolly's confession to him would break Stan's heart. He didn't realize how hard it was going to be to act like the good guy.
"Knock knock," Stan said,
"Who's tuh-tuh-there?" Bill answered
"Hatch,"
"Hah-Hatch, who?"
"You need to ask her out Stan," Richie said,
Bill's mouth hung open, and Stan's left eyebrow rose.
Both boys knew who Richie meant, but Stan also knew he'd never told Richie about his feeling for anybody. Bill knew it was obvious to anyone who had a pair of eyes, and if anyone was going to rip into Stan for it, it was going to be Richie.
"Lolly man! Everyone knows you like her, and if you don't do something about it, somebody else is going to ask her out!" Richie continued,
"I don't like anybody," Stan spat back, "and even if I did, I don't see how it's any business of yours,"
"It is my business because she asked me out and I had to say no! And I deserve some god damn retribution!"
"That's a big word for you," Stan said condescendingly
"She asked yuh-yuh-you out?" Bill croaked, "I guh-guess it is the eighties,"
"I know. First girls want to vote and now they're asking guys out? Where does it end?" Richie joked
Stan shook his head, "So you're telling me that I have to ask out a girl that you think I like because she likes you? First of all, I do not have any idea why any woman would want to date you. Secondly, if she likes you why would I bother asking her out?"
"I told her someone else liked her! She seemed curious about it!" Richie said
"You told her I like her?" Stan's eyes went wide
"No, I told her someone liked her, but you just admitted that you like her!" Richie's voice raised in excitement
Stan took a long and deep breath out into the air. He'd tried to hide his feelings, but it was a new experience for him. He'd always thought Lolly was pretty, but it was an all-new feeling to see her up-close, to see her bite her lip when she smiled, to smell her mother's perfume that she'd sneak a spray of onto her neck before leaving, to see the sunshine soak her dark hair.
Stanley stared at the space between Bill and Richie on the other side of the booth for a long time before answering, "Okay fine. I like her. Are we done?".
"Luh-look Stan, muh-maybe I can talk to her? We're cl-uh-uh-ose. I'll ask her about it without telling her who likes her." Bill offered
Richie nodded excessively in response, "DO that! You also owe me pizza, I could've gone on a date with her but I didn't because I'm the greatest friend in the whole world, and because I'm saving myself for Eddie's mother," Richie
"Then she can buy your pizza," Stan groaned sliding a five-dollar bill toward Richie, "Do whatever you want Bill, as long as it'll get Richie off my back,".
