Lolly Bootcamp (20)

Approximately two hours after the run-in with Beverly and Lolly, the group of Bill, Richie, Stanley, and Ben sat in Bill's garage. It was day one of 'Lolly Bootcamp', a concept Ben had thought of that involved coaching Stanley on how to win Lolly's heart.

"Ar-Are we ruh-really qualifuh-fuh-fied to help Stanley win a girl's heart? None of us even have guh-guh-girlfriends," Bill asked
"He needs all the help he can get," Richie said
"Shut up, Richie" Stanley sighed

Stanley sunk into a bean bag chair, he felt so frustrated. He'd had every opportunity to flirt with Lolly, and every opportunity to make a move, but he'd always been too scared. He wished he didn't like her, because then it would be easier to flirt with her. He thought back to the Sadie Hawkin's dance and how she looked in that white dress.

"Is it weird to be a secret admirer?" Stanley asked
Richie responded with, "Yes" at the same time that Ben responded with, "No".
The two glared at each other, before looking at Bill for the deciding vote.
"Nuh-not if you duh-don't think it is," Bill answered finally
"I saw her reading a poetry book in the library once. Do you think she'd like a poem?" Stanley asked
"Wait- in the library? Before school ended? How long has this crush been going on?" Richie interrupted

Stanley turned crimson, "Unimportant," He said.

Ben felt a little pride in knowing Stanley wanted to write Lolly a poem as well. It made him feel smart for doing it for Beverly already but sad that Beverly wasn't going to be the only girl in Derry with love poems in her backpack.

"But what if she flirts with you in person again?" Ben asked
"I'll die." Stanley answered simply,
"Right," Ben nodded
"Stanley, no," Bill sighed, "you'll respond and she'll blush and you'll live happily ever after,"
"He didn't even stutter," Richie said, more wide-eyed than usual, "Can we help you write it?"
"Why? So I can end up with, "Roses are red, violets are blue, you're cute, but Eddie's mom is cuter than you?" Stanley scoffed
"I would've just said Eddie, but if Eddie's mom is more your type, go for it,"  Richie smiled
"I think I'll just write it myself," Stanley finished

Later that evening, after his parents had tucked away in their bed and the only noise was the gentle hum of his ceiling fan Stanley grabbed a pencil and notebook paper to start writing.
Too scared to turn on a lamp, he cuddled close to the window stealing light from the streetlights outside.

"Summer shines now, but when the winter was blue,
my sunshine was you."
