I could always just ask her if she likes Bill, that seems like the most mature way to handle things. I suppose I know she doesn't like Bill. If she liked Bill, why would she flirt with Richie? But, if she liked Richie why would she hold Bill's hand? Why doesn't she hold my hand, we're friends too, aren't we? Why don't girls make any sense?

Stanley had tried to take Bill's advice to heart and stop being so head-over-heels for Louise Gellar, but he couldn't help it.

The dance is coming up, I wonder if she asked anyone yet. I guess if she did I would've heard about it by now. Maybe I should just ask her. That sort of defeats the whole purpose of the Sadie Hawkin's dance though, doesn't it?

The Sadie Hawkins dance was in a week and a half. Neither Beverly or Lolly had asked anyone yet, they'd been too busy talking with one another. Beverly was borrowing one of Lolly's dresses for the occasion and the girls grew closer by the day. They were both too shy to tell the other one who they'd wanted to ask, so they both just avoiding asking anyone, afraid they'd accidentally ask their friends crush.
However, it was driving the boys crazy. They all knew the girls would ask two of them, but they couldn't figure out who they were going to ask. As of right now,  over half of them were betting both girls would ask Bill. Bill was hoping his friends were wrong, he'd hate to have to say no to anyone. Apart from Eddie who couldn't care one way or the other, they were all hoping their bets were wrong.

Ben because of his feelings for Beverly which grew stronger every time he saw her, he'd even written her a haiku on a postcard and snuck it into her backpack.
Richie because he couldn't believe neither girl would ask him, he was always flirting and Bill never seemed to flirt with either of them.
Stanley because of how often he dreamed of going to the dance with Lolly.
Mike because he secretly wished Lolly would ask him, not because of any crush, but because he really wanted to rub it in Henry's Bowers face.

I could always just tell her I like her, but then if she doesn't like me back things are going to be really awkward. Or worse, she'll ask me to the dance out of pity. I hope she wears white to the dance. I remember the first day I saw her in the library, in her white turtleneck. I hope she wears white.

Stanley buried his face in his hands,

I have a serious problem. No normal guy thinks about stuff this much, do they? I wonder if Ben does this when he thinks about Beverly. Is it possible he's freaking out as much as I am right now?

Apart from Beverly, the entire Losers' Club knew about Ben's crush on her. He'd turn stark red when they as little as sat next to each other. His eyes would open wide when she walked by, and it was easy to tell with Lolly as a comparison that it wasn't just because she was a girl.

Why did it have to be girls choice? I guess on one hand if she doesn't ask me, at least I don't have to worry about Henry murdering me on the night of the dance. That's a bright side. And I know if she asks Bill, he doesn't have a crush on her so it'd just be as friends. That's another bright side.
Maybe not getting asked won't be so bad.
Still, I hope she asks me.
