A road trip?! My eyes nearly popped out of my head as I heard Scott outlining the details. He wanted to go see some friends across the country. Why?!! I felt like wailing, as if things weren't bad enough with the rogue running around, Scott wanted to move to unfamiliar territory where the likelihood of him becoming a target was pretty high.
I barely had time to get back to my apartment, pack a few clothes and necessities, scribble a barely legible note to my long suffering friend and flatmate before making it back to Scott's place just in time to see him getting into a hired car. I huffed and puffed as I threw my bag in the back and managed to get into the passenger side without him noticing.
'OK, here we go!' he said in his slightly gruff voice and I looked at him suspiciously.
We? Did he sense my presence? I made sure I was un-noticeable and frowned, had I missed something?
He patted the steering wheel lovingly. 'It's just you and me sweetheart.'
Ah, I got it now; he was talking to the car. Of course! Typical guy, I thought with relief and settled down for a long ride. I discovered Scott's choice of music was quite similar to my own and I relaxed thankfully against my seat. After several days of stress and panic over the rogue I definitely needed it. I fell asleep without realising it. I must have been really tired and who could blame me I thought afterwards. Scott's long hours at work and partying had definitely taken a toll on me if not on him.
I woke with a jerk and looked round groggily. The car was parked at a gas station. I sat up and stretched sleepily, feeling better for the rest as I clutched the jacket. Jacket? I looked down to see Scott's jacket draped over me. I frowned, how the hell...? And then I laughed at my stupidity, he had just thrown it on the seat and it had fallen over me. No big deal. Where was he anyway? The car was empty as was the rest of the car park. I left the car and walked to the cafe next to the gas station and peeked in.
There he was, wolfing down pancakes soaked in maple syrup. I glanced at my watch, eight a.m. I'd slept through the night? I really shouldn't have but it wasn't like I could have helped myself, I reasoned as though Ethan was standing before me and needed some sort of justification. Damn those pancakes looked good! I slipped into the cafe still in inconspicuous mode and sat down at a table far away from Scott. He barely glanced at me when the waitress came to take my order. Strong coffee and pancakes; a Fatelist's standard diet; caffeine and enough sugar to turn us into diabetics at a later stage...perfect.
I gulped down the coffee gratefully and wolfed down the pancakes...nothing ladylike about it. There wasn't time, Scott was draining his second cup of coffee like it was pure spring water. Where the hell were we anyway? I looked around the small cafe but all I could see was a large sign above the counter announcing that I was enjoying the hospitality of Mama Jackson, who possibly owned this generic joint. The waitress, a bored looking girl in her teens, returned with the check and chewed her gum impatiently as I paid with cash. I still had my credit cards in case I needed them, which hopefully I would not. I stuffed my wallet back in my jeans pocket and followed Scott back to the car.
I noticed he had brought supplies and stashed them in the backseat. Clever guy, I thought, eyeing the candy that was bursting out of the bags. The amount suddenly dropped my spirits again; it looked like he was packing for a major trip. Great!
