Stranger In The Elevator

part 1

Light rays peering through my curtains cast a soft glow onto my face. The soft light wakes me up and I stir in my bed, cautiously I open one eye to test the intensity of sun in my room,after I feel it's safe to open both eyes I do so and look around the room. Taking a look at my clock on the bed stand,I notice the time, 06:00 a.m. Sighing softly,I get out of bed and head over to my bathroom. I usually don't wake up this early but today is my first day at work and I definitely don't want to be late. You see,I am an engineer in training, fresh out of university and ready for the big world. At least that's what I have been telling myself,the truth is I am scared shitless!! I am scared of finally going out into the world and "adulting." This job just kind of seals my fate in,I guess there is no going back.
After taking a bath and dressing up in a plane button up shirt and high waisted chitenge midi skirt with simple flats,I head into my kitchen for an omelette breakfast and some freshly squeezed orange juice.
Once I am done,I grab my bag off the counter of my kitchen island and head out for my first day as an engineer in training!!

Hailing a cab from the main road,I give the driver instructions and I am on my way to town.
30 minutes later,I am walking through a huge, glass tinted building with the names "coral construction house" subtly engraved on the very top of the building. Heading straight to the receptionists counter,I give a small smile to the girl behind.

"Good morning,am checking in for my first day here. I believe we spoke on the phone earlier."

After a few seconds of her studying my face,a well coming smile graces her face revealing two dimples and a set of lovely white gapped teeth "of course, apologies for my slowness Ms Samantha Owens."

I chuckle softly "it's okay and please,call me Sam."

"Awesome,so let me quickly get you acquainted. You will be working under Mr Jim Hartwood and your office is opposite his. You will be sharing an assistant,Diana and once you get there,she will let you know everything else."

"Okay..." I say slowly, taking it all in.

The girl,who I am yet to know her name continues

"Here is your pass and Mr Hartwood is waiting for you." She says while handing the pass over to me

"Oh before I forget,Sam,well come to Pearl Construction House and my name is Mira Love. Can't wait to get to know you,not many ladies to make friends with here." She says while giggling softly and extending her hand. I can tell we will be good friends,her smile brings about positive vibes.
I take her hand and say "can't wait to be friends with you to Mira. I must say though, your last name is very interesting"

She lets out an unlady like snort and quickly covers her mouth "am sorry,I just get that alot and I was counting the seconds you would say it." We both laugh and I feel slightly embarrassed
"I hope I didn't offend you.."

Quickly she cuts me off "oh girl,it's okay!! Hey why don't we talk more at lunch? But until then you need to head up"

I nod and she gives me the instructions to where I should go and I grab my pass and I head out to see my new boss.

Passing an empty desk, which I suppose belongs to the Assistant Diana,I directly head to the hardwood door Mira told me to head to. I knocked softly and a kind voice from behind the door answered "Come in dear"
Taking one last breath,I walk in and find an old gentle man sitting behind a desk.
Looking up,he smiles ever so kindly and at once I feel all my worries disappear..
"You must be Samantha,my new "student" from Victoria University. I was expecting you"
He says while getting up and extending his hand from across the table,I walk over and shake his hand with a polite smile
"Yes sir,that's me. I have heard so many good things from Lady May about you and I hope we could become really good friends Sir"
Lady May was one of my favorite professors from the University I attended,she put in a good word for me here and that's how I got called in for an interview and I got accepted. It just so happens that Mr Hartwood is a very good friend of Lady May and they apparently owed each other favours. I don't know what those favours were and I decided not to pry.

"Aaah yess,May highly recommended you and I thought why not? I would be crazy by letting such a talented, straight A student like you slip by." He says with a playfull smile and motions for me to take a seat. I do so and take out a letter Lady May told me to pass to him.

He takes it with a smile and quickly opens it, momentarily,the smile disappears and a frown takes over but he quickly replaces it with a forced smile and I wonder if I even saw right.

Lady May instructed me strictly not to open it and to hand it over to Mr Hartwood as soon as I saw him. I wonder what's inside...

"May.. always with the jokes. I am assuming Mira told you where your office is? I will call in Diana and she will help you get acquainted." The dismissal was obvious and the change of atmosphere in the room could be felt. Quickly,I got up and thanked him. While I closed the door,I got a glimpse of the malevolent look on his face and it unnerved me.

I opened my new office door and walked in, a bit confused about what just happened. What the hell did that letter say??!
