Cadence:
October:
"I got the job!" Luc shouted into the living room and he scooped me up into his arms.
"That's amazing Luc!"
"We are going out tonight Cade. I want to celebrate."
Luc started his new job the following week and with both of us go into school full time, I haven't seen him much. I'm home before he is and when I'm getting ready for bed, he is coming home. This is causing us to fight more and it's not healthy for either of us. I stayed up and waited for him to come home tonight, but the front door never opened. I called him and his phone went straight to voicemail.
"Hey Luc. Just wondering when you are going to be home. Call me back when you get a chance. I love you, bye," I ended the call and felt my stomach grumble. I was really craving pancakes and of course that is the one thing I forgot to get on the last shopping trip. I slipped on my moccasins and pulled Luc's grey sweatshirt over my head. I text him to let him know that I was headed to the store. Not like it will do any good, since he hasn't talked to me in three days. I looked down at my engagement ring and a tear slipped down my cheek. I started the car and headed to the grocery store.
I pushed the cart around the store and put the pancake mix in the cart along with coconut milk and eggs. I pulled my phone out and frowned at the blank screen. It's almost nine and I know he gets off work at eight. My cart bumped someone and I looked up quickly.
"Luc," he gave me a small smile and then pressed his lips together.
"I was on my way home. I was grabbing you stuff to make pancakes," I looked at his basket and smiled.
"Thank you. I beat you to it though," he put the pancake mix and coconut milk into his basket and laced our hands together, "I thought you were ignoring my calls and texts," I helped him scan the items and he bagged them quickly.
"My phone has been off most of today because of all the training," I nodded and he swiped his card paying for all the food, "I wouldn't ignore you. Even when we're fighting," I kissed him quickly and he walked me to my car, "I'll see you at home," a warm burst of passion exploded from my heart and I kissed him again.
"I love the sound of that," once I arrive at home, I made pancakes for dinner and we sat in front of the tv.
"Can you make it to the doctors appointment tomorrow?" he sat his plate on the table and looked down at me.
"Crap. I thought that was next week. I have training tomorrow."
"Can you move the training?"
"No, Cade. I can't move the training. Without the training I can't do the job. I've told you how important it is."
"Sorry I forgot," I mumbled back and he stood up quickly.
"You're always forgetting things Cade!" he raised his voice and I dropped my head.
"I'm trying to remember things, but I have pregnancy brain Luc," he slammed his hand on the table and I jumped.
"You can't use that fucking excuse anymore. I never see you anymore because your always asleep or at school when I'm home," I tried to control my breathing and rubbed my hands over my tummy.
"I'm always tired because pregnancy isn't easy and I'm sorry, but you did this with me! Where is the Lucas that would rub my back and draw baths for me? Ever sense you got this job, you have come home stressed and angry at me," he grabbed my wrist and yanked me into his chest.
"Stop blaming me for getting you pregnant!" he snapped and I pulled my wrist from his right grip.
"Stop yelling at me!"
"I have to get out of here," he walked past me and slammed the door behind him. I took a deep breath and collapsed onto the couch.
"Shit." I rubbed the sides of my head and blew out another breath. Stabbing pain woke me up and I sat up on the couch, "Luc," I heard no response and then I let out a scream, "Luc!" I yelled and then I realized he wasn't home. I stood up from the couch and gripped onto the counter.
"Hello, 911, what is your emergency?" I took a deep breath and gripped the counter tighter.
"I need help...I'm pregnant and I think there is something wrong with my baby. I live in apartment C off of Oak Lane in Forview," I gasped and the phone slipped from my hands and I gripped my stomach, "Please stay with me baby," I whispered and crouched over on the ground and continued to cry through the pain. The EMT's lifted me into the ambulance and held my stomach tightly.
"Miss. I need to take you blood pressure and check the vitals of the baby," I nodded and then he looked at the ring on my left hand, "Are you married?" I shook my head and left out a gasp.
"My fiancé," was all I could get out and they placed an oxygen mask over my face.
"The baby is struggling. We need to deliver now," I became dizzy and more pain surged through my body.
"He's not due for another two months. He's going to die," I sobbed and then he looked up at me.
"You went into labor. We need to get the baby out before he suffocates," They told me to push so I pushed and a high pitched cry entered the ambulance, "He's only two pounds, but his vitals are healthy," they place an oxygen tube in his mouth and put him on my chest.
"Two pounds?" They nodded and we arrived at the hospital. I stared down at my beautiful boy and my eyes welled up with tears.
"He missed the birth," the nurse looked up at me and frowned.
"His father," I nodded and she helped me into the bed.
"We need to take him down to the NICU. His lungs are not strong enough yet," I nodded and she placed an oxygen mask over my face.
"Try to relax and I'll be back in a bit," I watched her leave with my son and tears dripped down my face. I missed him already and what made this so much worse was that Luc missed his son's birth, because we couldn't stop fighting long enough to remember he was in our lives.
