The next night, me and James were talking in the hallway when everything started to shake, it was like an earthquake, but we were at sea. I was scared, James could see that so he told me everything would be okay, that it was probably just something that happened in the engine room. I took his word for it and relaxed, we continued to talk.
About an hour later a man came running down the hallway yelling,"the ship is sinking, the ship is sinking!" I told James to meet outside my cabin and ran to tell my parents.
A few minutes later a crew member came into our cabin with life vests, he gave one to my mom, my brother and me, but not my dad. We went on deck, it was crowded, people were yelling and pushing. The band was playing, trying to calm the passengers down, but it wasn't working. Then I remembered James.
I ran back to the third class cabins looking for him, but the compartment was filling with water. I tried to find a way out, but I was lost and the water was up to my knees. It was freezing cold, I started to shiver and my muscles were seizing. "James! James! I called, the water was up to my waist and I started to panic, I tried calling again, but it was no use.I was losing hope because the water was up to my neck and would soon go over my head and I didn't know how to swim. I knew it would end right then and there so I just stood there waiting for my death to come. When everything started to fade I felt someones arm wrap around me and pull me up, when I broke the surface I gasped for air. I caught my breath and looked to see who pulled me up, it was James. He saved me.
I wrapped my arm around his neck, he wrapped his arm around my waist and we swam together. When we got on deck, James pulled me over to a crowd of panicking passengers in their nightclothes,"excuse me sir! Could my little sister get on that lifeboat? She's only eleven" He said to the officer putting passengers on the lifeboat, he looked at me then at James, after hesitating for a few seconds he grabbed my arm and put me in the lifeboat. "What about you?" I asked, yelling over the noise,"I need to find my parents, but I'll see you soon" he said assuring me, but he sounded uncertain. Before I could say anything else, still dripping from saving me from the freezing water, James ran away from the lifeboat down the slanted ship and out of site. "Lily?" I heard a small voice say, I turned around to find my little brother shivering in my very frightened mothers arms. I couldn't help but smile, they were okay!
Then I noticed my dad wasn't on the boat, " where's dad?" I asked My mom started sobbing, my heart sunk. I searched for him on the sinking ship, when I saw him I shouted to him, he noticed me and my panic stricken face and said,"I'll get on the next lifeboat that I can, I love you Lily!" " I love you too dad!" I started to cry because I knew those were probably the last words that I would ever say to him, there was no way my dad and James were getting on a lifeboat, the crew was putting women and children on first and they weren't even filling up the boats.
The lifeboat was lowered and I looked up at the ship, it was a horrid site. People were jumping off the sinking ship into the freezing water bellow, wives were parting with their husbands, children saying goodbye to their father for the last time and people frantically searching for their loved ones and a way to survive, the sound of my mothers quiet sobbing, my brothers soft snoring, and screaming of the people still on the ship filled my ears. I searched the lifeboats for my dad and James, hoping they weren't still on the ship or in the icy water, but I didn't see them. They were dead, I knew it. My dad and the first boy to ever really talk to me or show signs of liking me; my first love, were dead. I felt so guilty, James saved my life and I didn't thank him, I didn't do anything.
