Jon's P.O.V
I woke up the next morning with red eyes and a hoarse throat, last night was probably the worst night I'd been through so far, thank the gods that Grenn, Pyp, Sam and Hannah were here to have my back.
I sat on the edge of my bed for a few minutes thinking about everything, my father, my brother Robb, my two younger brothers Bran and Rickon, not to mention my sisters Arya and Sansa, they were still at Kings Landing, the thought of anything happening to them made me shudder.
Whilst I was in the middle of my thoughts I was startled by a knock on the door.
"Jon! Commander Mormont wants to speak with you." Hannah called.
"Okay, I'll be out in a second."
Hannah was waiting for me outside when I walked out.
"How are you feeling?" she asked.
"Sort of trying not to."
Hannah pulled me in for a small hug, which did make me feel a lot better.
"So what does Commander Mormont want to speak to me about?"
"I don't know, he just asked me to tell you that he wanted a word...I think it's about what happened last night."
I sighed and slowly walked down to the Commander's office, he didn't really speak to me at first, he was busy reading, after an awkward silence, he finally spoke up.
"You look exhausted." he said as I poured him a beer. "Was your moonlight ride that tiring?" I froze, he knew about me almost deserting the Nights Watch. "Don't look so terrified. If we beheaded everyone that ran away for the night, only ghosts would guard the wall. At least you weren't whoring in Mole's town. Honour made you leave, honour brought you back."
"My friends brought me back."
"I didn't say it was your honour."
"They killed my father."
"And you're going to bring him back to life, are you? No? Good. We've had enough of that sort of thing. Beyond the wall, the rangers are reporting whole villages abandoned. At night they see fires blazing in the mountains from dusk until dawn. A captured wildling swears their tribes are uniting in some secret stronghold, to what ends the gods only know. Outside Eastwatch Cotter Pyke's men discovered four blue-eyed corpses. Unlike us, they were wise enough to burn them. Do you think your brother's war is more important than ours?"
"No."
"When dead men and worse come hunting for us in the night, do you think it matters who sits on the iron throne?"
"No."
"Good. Because I want you and your wolf with us when we ride out beyond the wall tomorrow."
"Beyond the wall?"
"I'll not sit meekly by and wait for the snows. I mean to find out what's happening. The Nights Watch will ride out in force against the wildlings, the white walkers, and whatever else is out there. And we will find Benjen Stark, alive or dead. I will command them myself. So I'll ask you once Lord Snow, are you a brother of the Nights Watch or a bastard boy who wants to play at war?"
I couldn't take in what he was saying, beyond the wall? I was torn, I wanted to be honourable and serve in the Nights Watch and defend the realm, but that would mean I'd have to leave Hannah behind, typically the day after I told her I'd never leave her, and there was no way that Commander Mormont would let us take her along, he protects her like his own daughter, and no respective father would let his daughter go beyond the wall. Hannah was going to go crazy when she heard this, the best thing will probably be to keep it from her until tomorrow, I just hope she doesn't catch on before then.
