Caitlin left the mountain view around sundown, she didn't want to drive down the mountain in pitch darkness, so she got back to Star Labs late at night. After throwing her screams over the mountain cliff, she felt calmer. Not better, but calmer.
Team Legends were staying the night, and Team Flash were still there. When she arrived she went straight to the training room.
"Hey," she said, leaning against the doorway. Ronnie turned around from where he was sitting, taking off the boxing tape from his hands.
"Hey," he replied, as she walk in sitting beside him.
"I will always love you," Caitlin said, taking his hand in hers.
"And I'll always love you."
"But these past four years... I thought you were gone forever this time, and I tried so hard to move on... but each time I ended up getting hurt. But none of those times hurt more than losing you. But I kept trying, because I knew... you would have always wanted me to end up happy."
Ronnie nodded.
"And I think... or hope that I've made the smallest step of progress. And then you came back, which I couldn't be more estatic for... but I know... I just know. In our line of work, we'll never be able to know when either of us is safe. I just can't loose you again, Ronnie."
"You won't-"
"How do you know that," she replied softly and sadly.
Ronnie leaned back and sighed, he hated that he knew she was right.
"So you just want to break things off forever?" Ronnie asked.
"No, I don't want that. But for right now... if the universe seems decide to stop separating us again... maybe."
Ronnie stayed silent for a second, playing with Caitlin's hand, which was now cupped by his. He looked up from the ground and into her eyes.
"Maybe," he repeated.
.......
The next day both teams were at Star Labs, chatting and hanging out before Team Legends had to leave later that day.
Ray, Ralph, and Caitlin were chatting in her lab about some biotech Cisco and Caitlin were working on for Mercury Labs, while Rory just ate besides them.
Barry, Iris, Sara, Nate, and Amaya were just small talking in a corner of the Cortex.
And the three parts of Firestorm and Cisco were talking in the Cortex next to the comms.
"So I think we're just taking a break to see where the universe brings us," Ronnie said, talking about the conclusion of his talk with Caitlin.
"Are you taking a break? Or is this going to be another Ross and Rachel thing?..." Cisco questioned.
"I think we set on a break," Ronnie replied, sorrowfully looking through the glass of the med lab at Caitlin. "Maybe she's right that we need to do this."
"Well Ronald, maybe with some space or not you're love bond will never break," Stein assured him.
"Yeah man, I'm sorry. But what I've heard about you guys from Stein and Caitlin. I know she loves you," Jax added.
"Thanks guys I just don't want to do..." Ronnie trailed off. "I don't think I can come back to Team Flash, due to all the possible awkwardness I'd prefer to avoid. And records still say I'm dead so finding another job as a structural engineer may be tough."
"I may have a solution for that," Stein stated giving a look at Jax.
"Now?" He said.
"Yes, Jax now."
"What? What's going on?" Ronnie questioned.
"Ronald, I've been thinking long and hard about retiring from the line of superhero work. But I didn't know when the best time was. Protecting the timeline is a lot of work. I thought the best time was when I found out about Lily, or when RJ was born. But I knew if I didn't help save the world as half of Firestorm, there would be no world for me to enjoy with them. But now that you are back... I think it's time I step off the mantle. Spend my days at home, teaching RJ the basics of chess."
"And leave the Legends?!" Ronnie said.
"They'd be gaining another great one."
Ronnie pondered and thought for a moment.
"What do you say man?" Jax asked holding out his hand, "want to be a Legend?"
Hesitantly, Ronnie shook Jax's hand.
