Taunton State Hospital in Taunton, MA, opened as the State Lunatic Hospital in 1854. But changing its name couldn't erase the dark history lurking within its walls.
Its most famous resident was Jane Toppan a serial killer who, confessed to murdering 31 people while she worked there as a nurse. There were rumours that some of the staff belonged to a satanic coven, and would take patients down to the basement to perform rituals and even human sacrifices. Lizzie Borden herself may have while awaiting trail, though historians dispute this story.
Today, the hospital is abandoned. While it was still open, though, unusal activity plagued the staff and residents. Lights would flicker on and off and a mysterious presence blocked entry to the basement. Many people claimed to see a shadowy figure on the grounds. It would climb the walls and linger on the ceilings peering down at terrified patients.
