Built in the 1880s, the very presence of the Danvers State Mental Hospital is enough to give you chills. The looming gothic structure even inspired the Arkham Sanitarum featured in H.P. Lovecraft stories.

The hospital was only meant to house 600 patients, but somehow ended up with over 2,300. The living conditions were almost as horrific as the treatment methods; allegedy, Danvers is where the frontal lobotomy was perfected. The staff was so overwhelmed that there are quite a few documented cases where patients died and weren't discovered for days.
