Maurice Ravel, the composer, named this piece "Pavane pour une Infante Defunte" (French for "Pavane for a Dead Princess") for the sake of alliteration. He dedicated the piece to a certain Winnaretta Singer, but didn't intend the piece to lament a dead girl; rather, the piece was meant to be an "evocation of the pavane that might have been danced by such a little princess." Although "Pavane" was originally written for piano, Ravel later arranged it for orchestra.

The pianist in the video above is Monique Haas.
