Chapter 28: Family Reunion

On the train, Kyle and Dante stand up and recover as James talks through the radio.

James: Goddamn it! We fucking suck!

Dante: It's all right.

Nathan: We're going to try to find a way to you guys!

Dante: Got it! 

Dante turns to Kyle.

Dante: Come on! The Oasis is at the front car!

Suddenly, Zeus Corps Soldiers begin to move in on Dante and Kyle.

Kyle: Come on, you fuckers!

Dante and Kyle fight through the Zeus Corps Soldiers. During the fight, a bullet accidently hits a fuel tank.

Kyle: Shit! Careful! If that thing blows, it'll take the whole damn cart with it! Along with us!

After the gunfight, Dante and Kyle move up to a door as Mr. Jax decloaks.

Kyle: Jax. Open the door.

Dante: hey, Kyle.....just want to say however this goes....I'm sorry....for thinking you were a traitor...

Kyle: It's all right, man....you had your reasons.....

Dante: No matter how this ends.....thanks for sticking by me..

Kyle: Don't mention it....Thanks for not being an asshole in this fucked up world.

Mr. Jax starts to hack the door. A noise behind them is heard. Dante and Kyle approach the noise with caution. Suddenly, Harry attacks, knocking Kyle to the side of the train. Harry disarms Dante and punches him in the chest. Harry prepares to approach Dante, who kicks him in the face. Kyle manages to climb back onto the train.

Dante: Kyle! Go! This is between me and him! Go to the Oasis!

Kyle steps back and retreats while Dante confronts Harry.

Dante: Listen to me, Harry. You don't have to do this.

Harry pulls out his machete.

Dante: Son....please do make me do this.

Harry: I told you already; your son is dead.

After a few tense moments, Dante pulls out his machete and after a brief standoff, Dante engages Harry in a machete duel. At one point, Harry knees Dante in the stomach, before hitting him with the handle of his machete.

Harry: You're a weak old man.

Dante: Fuck it...

Harry grabs Dante and prepares to strike with his machete, but Dante elbows and backhands Harry.

Harry laughs.

Harry: Not as weak as I thought....

Kyle manages to reach the front of the train and prepares to reach the Oasis console, before Barnes reveals himself.

Barnes: Desipich! This is it! This is where you die! I'm going to do you a favor and give you an honorable soldiers death.

Barnes pulls the machine gun right off the hinges and aims it at Kyle.

Kyle: I think you and I have a different idea of honorable death.

Barnes opens fire at Kyle, who takes cover behind the walls.

Kyle: Fuck me!

At the last car of the train, Harry and Dante continue engaging in their machete fight.

Dante: Harry, listen to me! I can help you!

Harry: Help me?! There's no helping me!

Dante: You remember when you were six years old; our trip to Six Flags! You said it was the best time you ever had with me!

Thought seemingly conflicted, Harry continues attacking Dante, who continues evading or blocking Harry's attacks.

Dante: Your first day of 4th grade; your teacher called and said you drew a tree. You remember that?! Do you remember the teacher gave you a reward for your drawing?! Your mother and I were so proud of you!

Harry: Shut the fuck up!

Dante: Christmas!

Dante dodges an attack.

Dante: Christmas was always our favorite holiday! You got so excited for Christmas every year! You would write your letters to Santa in June! Your favorite Christmas movie is the Polar Express! We watched every holiday on the 24th!

Harry: Those memories are dead! Just like you're going to be!

At the front car, Barnes continues opening fire, but eventually runs out of ammo on the minigun. Kyle pops out of cover and aims his rifle at Barnes, who tosses the minigun at Kyle, who dodges. Barnes disarms Kyle and grabs him by the throat, lifting him off the ground. Kyle punches Barnes in the face as Barnes punches Kyle in the ribs, before slamming him the ground. Barnes tosses Kyle across the floor, before he jumps to the lower level. Barnes engages Kyle in fist fight, both delivering blows and punches to each other. At the last car, Dante at one point restrains Killen, who lifts up his arm, revealing a bruise on his hand.

Dante: That cut....you got while falling off a tree....while playing with Kara....you cried....your mother came out and hugged you....Kara thought it was cute of you to cry....

Harry begins to feel conflicted.

Dante: Son....Please.....Barnes is just using you. He is lying to you. Please, think of Kara and your Mother......

Harry stares into Dante's eyes, before he pulls out a blade and stabs Dante in the torso.

Harry: It's too late for me....

Dante pulls out the blade and falls to his knees, before Harry approaches Dante. In the front car, Kyle backhands Barnes, who punches Kyle, before headbutting him. Barnes rams Kyle's head into the wall, but Kyle elbows Barnes and punches him twice. Kyle punches Barnes to his knees and then knees him in the face while he's on the ground. At the last car of the train, Harry kicks Dante onto his back and attempts to stab Dante, ensuing a struggle between the two.

Dante: (straining) Harry....Please....

Harry: Just stop! Stop trying to be my fucking Dad now! It's too late to save me! It's time for you to join Mom.

During the struggle, Dante spots a knife and then punches Harry in the temple, allowing to grab the knife, before he reluctantly stabs Harry in the neck, critically wounding him. Harry stumbles off of Dante, clutching onto his bleeding neck and leaning against the wall. Dante stands up and walks to Harry.

Dante: Harry.....

Harry pulls out a revolver and aims it at Dante.

Harry: Get the fuck away from me.....It's all your fault why I'm like this. You made me into this monster. You left me in this world for twenty years.

Dante: Harry...I'm sorry....I'm sorry you felt abandoned.....it's not too late.....I can get you patched up....help us....please...we're family, son.

After a tense moment, Harry sheds tears and lowers his gun.

Harry: It's too late for family....I'm sorry, Dad....

Harry puts the revolver in his mouth.

Dante: Harry! No!

Dante lunges, but Harry pulls the trigger and shoots himself in the mouth, ending his own life.

Dante: NO!

Harry's lifeless body falls off the train as Dante kneels to the ground, tearfully mourning the loss of his son.

Dante: Fuck! Goddammit.....my boy....

After briefly mourning, Dante looks up, enraged, before he stands up with a purpose.
