"Izzy!" I was standing at my tent, packing a little bag to go on our little outing when I hear Lindsay's voice again.
"Lin! Oh my gosh it's so good to hear your voice!" I drop the bag in excitement, clutching my happy heart.
I look around the camp, everyone is frozen. Mary-Beth was mid-conversation with Kieran over by the hitching posts, Karen had a bottle Kentucky bourbon turned up to her mouth, Susan was bitching Tilly out, Tilly was in the middle of an eye roll while Susan was frozen with her mouth wide open. I laugh at the sight, couldn't really help it if I tried. I look over at Arthur, he was bent down to Jack's level smiling like the big softy he is.
"Isabella...I know that look." Lindsay warns.. "Don't you dare look at him that way!"
"I ain't lookin at him in anyway." I stare into the blue sky.
"Yes you are. You look at him like...how you look at pizza! And yes, I know the look. Remember Dominique?" I cringe at the name.
"Oh shut up! He's not even real." I flip her off only to hear a dramatic gasp.
"Ooh if I could kick you right now I would.." She growls. " I hope you know that I've been watching for days now. It's going so damn slow. But we're close to chapter 3 luckily. It's almost like my own personal reality show." She giggles.
I silently rejoice inside at the news of chapter 3. "Thank god..I miss pizza. I wish you never brought it up." I groan sadly.
"Speaking of which...I ordered a big, greasy pepperoni pizza and someone's at my door! Haha!" She laughs evilly, it echoes over my head like thunder.
"You're so-" everything starts moving around me again, laughter gone. "Evil." I whisper to myself.. I never thought I'd say this but I miss her so much.
I pick up my bag, sighing. "You okay?" Arthur asks, starling me.
"Yeah..just miss my friend." I reply and he drops his head, hat blocking his eyes.
"Yeah..that's the worst feelin to have in life, missin someone you can't see." He looks at me with solemn eyes. "Who is your friend anyways?" He asks, crossing his big arms.
I smile to myself thinking of Lindsay. She loves to dance and sing, her black shinny hair is cropped to her shoulders, big brown eyes always look happy, and her beautiful smile lights up the room. "She's amazing. She's annoying but God only knows how much I miss her."
"I miss...a lot of people we've lost and left behind. But I keep going because the ones I got now need me. And we need you." He steps closer, the smell of cedar caresses me like a kiss, the sweet hint of cigar is almost comforting.. "I'm sorry for...being a fool." He apologizes shocking me further.
I shake my head, taking a deep breath. "Don't apologize. Please. You haven't done anything." I smile. "Like I told Lenny, shit happens." I laugh, he only nods his head solemnly.
"Seems like that's all I get is shit. For people like us..we're thieves in a world that no longer want us no more." He's serious but his eyes look so sad. "The only reason I keep going is for our people. This gang is all I got." I lay my hand on his upper arm, the warm muscles flex.
"It doesn't have to be that way Arthur." He only stares at me, I notice for the first time the green-yellow around his pupil, the way it transitions into deep blue. I could get lost so easily in them.
"Uncle Arthur!" I nearly jump out of my skin when little Jack starts hollering excitedly. "Momma says you're going fishing with us." He smiles up at me, his little cheeks flushed.
"I am." I smile down.
"Good! Uncle Arthur likes you." He giggles sweetly. A blush touches my cheeks at the bluntness.
"Cmon. Let's catch us some fish." Arthur says, ignoring the comment.
What am I getting myself into..?
