Elle

I sit in the front seat of my moms car, refusing to say anything as she pulls into the parking lot of my new school. The fifth high school I've been to and my mom is hoping this is "the one".

Give me a fucking break.

When I don't move to open my door she goes around the car, opening it for me and grabbing my bag from my lap.

"Hurry up Elle, I don't have time for your shit today." I sigh and step out of the car. She slams the door and waits for me to start walking as she follows me.

We walk into the very small building and are greeted by the secretary. I stop paying attention because I've been through this so many times I can practically fucking quote this.

My mom explains my "situation" to her. We meet the principal. My mom explains it again before the principal assures me that this is the school for me just like every other principal has at every other stupid school.

"Elle." The principal addresses me when she realizes I haven't said anything.

I look up at her and she offers a fake friendly smile.

"I'm not sure if you were listening to our conversation, but I'm Mrs. Richards. I would really like to help you graduate and reach your goals. I will be with you every step of the way through out the year." She explains that this school isn't like a regular school.

"All of our students are in different grades, 9-12 of course but they work at their own pace. This school is very independent. There are three teachers and we will assign you to one and you will stay in there all day, except for lunch and breaks of course. Our school only has about thirty students attending at the moment but it is mid September and we are hoping to accommodate more, like yourself."

"Why are there so little kids?" I ask, although I don't mind. I get anxiety around too many people and I prefer it this way.

"We like to pay direct attention to the students and we can't do that if there are so many." She explains and I just nod. I'd be lying if I said it didn't make me feel a little bit better knowing I wouldn't have to switch classes with hundreds of random kids.

"Well I'm going to walk your mom out now. Is that okay?" Mrs. Richards stands up as does my mom and I can feel my throat get fatter and my breathing is off. I just nod and look at the ground. Without saying anything my mom leaves as does Mrs. Richards. I decide to find a bathroom and calm myself down.

I look in the mirror and can't help but criticize everything I think someone else might if they look close enough. I'm not as skinny as I could be and that's my ugliest trait. My thighs touch and my hips move too much when I walk and people are so judgmental. I take a shaky breath before mentally preparing myself and walking back into Mrs. Richards office to see her standing waiting for me.

"For a second I thought you took off on me." She jokes but I just give her a small smile and shake my head.

"I know starting new schools is scary, and sometimes we can get a lot of anxiety and jitters about meeting new people but it will be okay." I just nod along and she gives me a hug which I really wasn't expecting.

"I hope you find that we're kind of like a big family here. We all take care of each other and I even assigned you my favorite teacher." I smile as she grabs my bag from her floor.

"Come on, let's walk you to class yeah?"

Damon aka Mr. Russell

These kids are fucking bullshit.

I sigh as I rub my temples and look at the eight students in my class who are almost all asleep. None of them are going to fucking graduate if they keep this shit up. They're scattered around the room, four of them sitting at the table in the middle of the class using lap tops, the other four scattered along the walls where the desk tops are. I shake my head and try to figure out how to motivate them so they'll want to get the fuck out of here but my thoughts are short lived when I hear the door handle jiggle.

I turn and see Mrs. Richards through the long glass windows and go to open the door for her.

"Hello Mrs. Richards." I make sure to say it extra loud and I can hear students behind me fumbling to look like they're doing something productive.

Idiots.

It's only now that I realize she has a girl with her.

A fucking hot one.

I ignore myself and turn my attention to Mrs. Richards before I get too much of a good look at her.

"And who might this be?" I smile at the young girl.

Just her face. Just her face.

"This is Elle Carter." She places her hand on Elle's back and I see her flinch before she covers it with a smile and looks at my chest instead of my face.

I clear my throat and she looks up now, her light eyes meeting mine.

"It's very nice to meet you, Elle." I put my hand out and she shakes it, her hands are small and warm in my large ones and her touch sends shocks up my arm.

I ignore that as well as I open the door further with my foot and motion her inside. She looks inside the room hesitantly and bites her lower lip.

"Go ahead babe, you're okay. There aren't many people, this is the smallest class we have." Mrs. Richards tries to coax her into the room and now I'm confused.

"You can come inside and take a seat wherever you like. I'll help you set up your account and we can get to work." I say in case she's confused or doesn't know what to do. She looks at me and nods with a small smile before taking a deep breath and walking into the room. I follow to walk in after her but Mrs. Richards stops me.

"Do you mind if I talk to you for a moment?" She waves me further into the hallway so I let the door close and follow her into the hallway.

"Before you help her with anything I would like for you to take a look at her transcript." She gives me a beige folder she was holding in her hand and I nod assuring her I will.

"May I ask why? I didn't have to review any other student transcripts."

"Well, she isn't really like the other students," she cringes as the words come out of her mouth. "I didn't mean it like that, but she's very unique.  Please just look and I can assure you, that you will be as confused as I am as to why she would want to come here."

She looks at the door before walking down the hall back to her office. I stare at the folder in my hand already fucking confused as to what makes her so "different" compared to the other drop outs that go here.
