"...A surprise encounter
with a surprising person
makes everything seem right
Things fall into place
after a large ordeal of disgrace."
I didn't feel like going for work. I wanted to see the village and the sea. I got out of my caravan at 6 in the morning and went for a walk around the beach. I found a couple of shells and put them in my pocket to give to Tillie.
The shops opened around 9 am. Ferka came and met me at town. I decided to help him job hunt . There weren't many takers and not because the had no vacancies. What was up with these people?
"STEFAN!!!" OH NO!!! I turned and sure enough it was 'Millie the nut'. I had given her a little nick name. ferka raised his eyebrows. Maybe because I was supposed to be one of the good, responsible guys in the kumpania. Who am I kidding? Of course I've oggled girls and kissed a few. The worst I've done is felt Tara up. One time she fell on me accidentally on purpose, 3 years after we dumped eachother and my hand moved from her waist to the side of her shapely breast. It wasn't an accident that my hand shot up like that but nor was her falling on me. So, win-win.
Millie the nut was a little plain today in a cute way. Her hair was loose and so straight and she wore a blue tee with angel wings on it, a pair of black jeans and black laced plimsoles.
"Hiya", she said stopping in front of us. She nodded at Ferka whose mouth was open. I wished a fly would go into it.
"Hi", I said scratching the back of my neck." Who...who are you?"
"Millie, we met in the woods last night." Uh oh. Ferka's mouth closed... as if by magic.
"Did we?", I asked. My cheeks felt hot.
Ferka folded his arms across his chest. "And you said no one was in the woods last night."
"Hi, who are you?", Millie asked Ferka.
"I'm his cousin, Ferka", he said shaking Millie's hand.
"Nice to meet you."
"Oh, in what way?", he asked pretending to flirt with her.
" In a good way. I thought Stefan was the only hot one in your lot. Are you planning on stalking me as well?" Ferka's eyes popped out.
"It's not what it sounds like ", I said.
"What I just said you were walking behind me, nothing else", she said. What was up with her?
"Yeah she just said you were walking behind her", parroted Ferka. "Why' re you getting all defensive?"
"You..Both of you are mad." That was all I managed. They laughed.
"So are you boys just mooching around?", asked Millie.
"I'm try'na get a job",said Ferka.
"Yeah so we'd better hurry to see how many places we can manage," I said. "Come on Ferka."
"I could help", said Millie.
"No..",I started.
They ignored me. "Are you sure ?",asked Ferka.
"Yeah, my friend Karl's got this news agent's shop and needs a sales person."
"No..we'll manage",I said.
"Like we have so far", said Ferka sarcastically.
"Just because she mentions some one. It does not mean that they would be ready. Look at the shops we've been to so far,"I rebuked.
Ferka looked at Millie. She shrugged. " Your choice." She looked a bit hurt. That made me feel bad.
"Okay we'll go see this shop," I said and we followed her. It took a long time because anyone and everyone in the village knew her. Someone said hello and another stopped to talk to her about Mrs Martin or someone mentioned how Sally got into Oxford. They mostly gave us nervous looks, a couple of them nodded. Her friend Lauren winked at me. I just stared after her... she was hot!!!! Then I turned to see Millie giving me a look. I smiled. We finally arrived at the news agent's. Karl was an old jamaican.
"Hi Karl", she called opening the door.
"Well if it ain't me sugar pie Millie, de love of Britston. Where ya been? Ain't seen much of you lately."
"I've been busy helping with Grandpa's teashop."
"Ah..'Ows it been?". Karl momentarily paused sorting magazines on the shelf to let Millie prattle on about work. He looked interested. I cleared my throat. The two turned to us.
"Whaddaya want sirs ?", asked Karl smiling. That was a surprise.
"They're with me", said Millie. "The shor....I mean younger one wants a job." Karl looked us up and down.
"Must be good if ya know 'im. I'll give 'im de job." He turned sternly to Ferka. "Any ting wrong and you be outta here. Kapish?" Ferka nodded. "A'right come 'ere and I show you de basics." Ferka walked over. Millie moved next to me.
"Thanks Karl", said Millie. "Listen Ferka when you're done, call Stefan and we'll meet you at the teashop. Okay?" I stared at her aghast. Before I could say anything, she got a hold of my hand and pulled me out of the shop. Why were we running? Oh well. We jumped on a bus and she forked out for two tickets just as the door was about to close.
"Where are we going?", I asked.
"The RF mall at Clapton."
"Why do I have to come?"
"Because none of my other friends are free and well you just are coming." I sighed knowing there was no other option because the place looked foreign. I just hoped no one in the kumpania saw.
