Friday slowly arrived. They were able to take the cast off of Jay's arm, but he still has one on his leg so it can continue to heal fully.
I'm packing up everything I brought into the hospital in the six weeks we've been here. Jay is sitting on the bed watching me move around the room.
"I wish I could help you," he says as I look over at him.
I stick my tongue out at him and he laughs. "Well you can't," I say as I toss a sweater at him. "You'll probably want that back."He picks the sweater up and looks at it. It's just a simple camouflage sweater, but I had "World's Best Dad" added on the front almost two months ago. He looks up at me and smiles.
"I wondered where this sweater went," he says as he swipes at a tear on his cheek.
"I took it with me because it's your favorite sweater. It made me feel safe while I was at the cabin," I say as I sit on the side of his bed again. "I just wanted to make it extra special for you, so I had that added to the front."
"I love it," he says as he leans forward and gives me a kiss.
"I'm glad," I say as I grab it from him and put it on. "But I'm wearing it home."
I continue to pack everything up as he laughs at me.
"What's so funny?" Ethan asks as he walks through the door.
"Ask Jay because I have no idea what he's laughing at," I say as I turn towards him. "All I did was put a sweater on."
Ethan looks at Jay and all he does is shrug his shoulders. Ethan shakes his head and chuckles. "You got everything packed up?" he asks as he turns towards me.
"Yes, I do," I say as I zip the bag up. "Would you mind taking this and I'll drive Jay home?"
"Absolutely," he says as he grabs the bag. "We're going to your dads house, right?"
I nod my head. I haven't been back there since I left but Jay and I both agreed that we would give living there a try. If I can't handle it, we'll sell the house and buy another one to raise our daughter in.
Ethan walks out with my bag as we wait for the doctor to come in and fully discharge Jay.
"Okay Mr. Newcomb, as much as we're going to miss seeing this beautiful young lady around here so much, let's get you home," the doctor says as he walks in the room.
Jay sighs. "As much as I appreciate everything you guys have done for me, I just want to get out of here." He lifts his arm up towards the doctor. "Unhook me."
The doctor signs the discharge papers as a nurse takes the heart rate monitor off and the IV needle out. Not hearing the constant beep of his heart scares me because that's all I've heard for six weeks.
Jay looks up at me and gives me a quick smile. They help him into a wheelchair and hand him his crutches so he can get around at home.
"I'll go get the jeep and bring it around front."
"We'll meet you at the front door," the nurse says as she begins to wheel Jay out.
I turn to the doctor and the nurse stops. "Thank you for not giving up on him. I know there were a few times you could have and that we were going to," I look over at Jay. "But you stuck by every decision that was made. You allowed our daughter to have a chance to grow up with her dad."
"That's what we do Krys. It's our job."
I nod my head as Jay shakes the doctors hand in thanks.
