Everleigh Dawn Newcomb arrived on November 6th at 11:48 am weighing in at 8 pounds, 5 ounces. It's like I blinked and she's already a month old.
Jay and I have been busy cleaning up the rest of dads stuff. We've been sorting stuff into the attic if I want to keep it, but a lot of the stuff is going to be donated to goodwill.
I'm keeping all of his plaid shirts though because I want to have them made into a quilt so that they're always with me.
The last room we have to go through is his office. The door hasn't been opened since he was killed, but it's time to clean it out.
Eve is sleeping in her room with her mobile and sound machine on. I've got the baby monitor attached to the waistband on my pants so I can hear when she wakes up.
I'm standing outside the office door trying to make myself open it.
"We don't have to clean it out. It can stay just how it is," Jay says as he looks at me.
I shake my head. "No we'll need the room for a playroom eventually. I can do this," I say as I look at him. "I'll be okay."
I put my hand on the door handle and twist it. I push the door open and walk into the dark room.
Jay flips the light switch and sighs. "If you want to stop just say the word," he says as I walk over to dads chair.
I run my hand across the back of the old wooden chair and take a deep breath. I can still smell his cologne.
"I'll start with the desk if you want to start with the bookshelves," I say as I sit down in the chair.
"Got it. Older books go to the attic right?" I nod my head. "And any other books I'm not sure of ask first?" I nod my head again.
I start to go through the paperwork on his desk making sure to read through each one briefly before I decide what to do with it.
There are a lot of started letters to mom that he never finished. They all start with 'I'm sorry'. I throw them out and move on to the drawers.
I slowly get through all of the paper in them until I get to the last drawer. I try to open it but it won't budge.
"What the hell?" I say as I try to rip it open.
"What's wrong?" Jay asks as he walks over to the desk.
"I can't get this last drawer open," I say as he tries to open it.
"Is it locked?"
"There's no lock on it," I say as I look at the front of the drawer.
"Are we keeping the desk?" he asks as he tries to pull the drawer again.
"No, I was going to donate it. Why?"
"Because," he says as he lifts the top off the desk up to pull the drawer out. "I don't think that's gonna be easy to fix," he says with a chuckle.
I shake my head at him. "Thanks for getting the drawer open," I say as he walks back over to the books.
"You're welcome."
I start going through the last of the paperwork and get to an envelope with my name on it. I open it up and see some papers and a key.
"What's that?" Jay asks as he comes back over to look at what I had in my hand.
"Its paperwork and a key for a safety deposit box."
"Did you know he had one?"
I shake my head. "He never mentioned it to me."
