Dawn
One week has passed since that morning Micaah kissed me and I feel like a brand new rainbow full of vibrant colors just showing off to the world.
I work on strengthening my voice, my siren goading me to swim out to sea to practice on some poor sailor and drag him down to the bottom. Tempting, oh so tempting-but I curse at that devil on my shoulder and shove its invitations away from the forefront of my mind.
Instead I focus on the positive, on that one song that makes me hold my breath at the end and causes my heart to swell with pure intentions. Soon I'll have to sing it-not only for myself and the occasional crab or sea gull that pass by but to gently bring life into the world.
I'll have to sing the babes from these she-wolves' bellies... the same ones that shunned me back in my youth, the same ones who look at me in disgust now that the word has spread that Micaah and I are dating.
I haven't seen Kerissa nor Harlem since the night of the party but I know he's still watching me-the fucking creeper.
He's like a dark shadow no amount of light could extinguish. I know it's getting on Micaah's nerves-smelling Harlem's scent and seeing his markings on my land. I wouldn't be surprised if Micaah shifts and goes on a pissing spree around my border one of these days.
The rustling of clothes brings me back to the present and the smell of an unfamiliar wolf.
"H-Hi." the she-wolf stutters. She looks to be just out of her teenage years and a shy smile on her lips.
"Hello." I reply hesitantly looking down at my appearance. I was still in my siren form, my tail swaying in the shallow water as I lean against a rock.
"I'm sorry to bother you. I heard you singing and well I got curious." she says climbing down the rock with a refined agility only proper training can provide.
"Cats are curious, not wolves." I reply and smile a little when she laughs a light tinkling laugh.
"Well could you blame me?" the female shrugs. "Since I was a little pup I've heard stories about you." I quirk a brow. Stories-now that's interesting.
"Like what?" I ask playing with a school of new hatchlings with my tail.
"The whole she-bang about you trying to steal a mate and how dangerous your kind is." I chuckle a bit, me trying to steal a mate? Hilarious.
"They say you're a monster that drags men down to the bottom of the sea. Rip the skin from their bones for fun. You use their bones as-"
I couldn't help it, I laugh uncontrollably and the female glares at me.
"Believe me, young one. I am a monster but I am not a cannibal." I wipe the moisture at the corners of my eyes. I haven't laughed so hard in a while.
The female watches me, her glare smoothening out into a look of inquisitiveness as my tail sweep whichever side the currents take it.
"Must be cool being able to breathe under water." she murmurs taking off her shoes and dangling her legs off the rock until finally her toes are submerged in the water.
"Must be cool being able to turn into a wolf." my lips quirk a tad bit when she frowns and tucks her hair behind her right ear.
"Touché."
We lapse into a comfortable silence, the gurgling of the water, the gentle splashes and the occasional pelican's squawk.
"Most of them are afraid of you yet they call on you to bring our new generation safely into our pack." she begins. "I cannot understand it, I want to but I cannot grasp the concept of what they are doing, why they are doing it." she looks me in the eyes, not challenging but as if she can find the answers to her own personal enigma by staring into me.
