Blood was everywhere. But if it made it any better, most of it looked to be the sickly kind that came from the zombies. Even little Abby had gore on her jacket, and her hair was sticking up in odd places from the braid she was wearing.
"What happened?" Clarke breathed as they came into ear shot.
Michael shook his head, "inside first. I want Abby inside first."
He didn't look at either of us as he carried his little sister past us, inside. I looked to Sam, who brought up the rear, and he shrugged. Leo circled his legs and Sam knelt down to give the wolf a pet on the head before gesturing for us to go inside first.
Clarke and I followed the others inside and Sam shut the door behind us, ordering Leo to go and lay down. Michael disappeared around the corner, walking towards the bathroom with Abby.
"What happened?" Clarke asked again.
This time it was Adam who spoke as he scratched the back of his neck, "We ran into some zombies on the way home."
"How many?" I asked as I crossed my arms over my chest.
"It was only two at first, but then Abby got scared and ran off, into a house, and there were more inside of it. She nearly got bitten. Scared the crap out of Michael when he realized that she was screaming inside there. We'd just taken down our two, and then inside that house there was like five of 'em."
I breathed out. Just the thought of Abby being in danger like that sent a chill down my spine. It must have been awful for Michael to have gone through.
"But you're all okay, right?" Clarke's voice was worried, but not as much as it had been when they'd first walked through.
Sam was wiping green tinted blood off of his hands onto his pants when he responded, "Nobody got bit. We're all fine, considering. I think Abby is a little shaken, but it would be surprising if she wasn't. I think that was her first real encounter with the zombies."
"Not to be an ass," Adam said, crossing his arms and leaning against a wall, "but if we're going to get those beds we should do it now. I'm game to go out, since I'm already dirty."
"Shouldn't we wait for Michael to get out here?" Sam asked.
Adam shook his head, "wasting daylight. The beds aren't that far, right? There's a couple houses nearby with beds we can take, and we won't be too far."
"I'll stay here," Clarke volunteered, "I'll tell Michael where you guys went if he comes out and you're gone."
Sam frowned but nodded, "Okay. Kodi, are you coming to help?"
I gave a nod, "the three of us should be able to do it. Two carrying the bed, one watching out and getting the doors and stuff."
"Good, let's go before anymore zombies decide to come out of the blue."
Adam shoved off the wall and made his way to the door without looking back at us. It seemed the attack had put him on edge, and he was eager to be done going outside today. Sam and I exchanged looks before following after him.
"Be safe," Clarke called out after us, holding Leo's collar to keep him from following after Sam.
I turned and waved to her before going out the door Sam held open for me. Adam was waiting for us outside, and once we were out, I realized I hadn't grabbed a coat. But it had been sunny for the better part of the day, and the wind wasn't too bad so I didn't say anything, not wanting to hold them up. They probably wanted to get this over with so that they could get back and take showers.
