A/N - I feel like this chapter and the next one maybe are mostly filler, but I feel like Madison comes to some good realizations in this chapter.
Bucky raised a gun to shoot Steve, but before he could, Sam swooped in and knocked him away from them.
Natasha grabbed Bucky's grenade launcher and fired it at him before he could try and shoot Steve again.
Black SUV's surrounded them.
"Drop the shield, Cap! Get on your knees!" Rumlow shouted.
They all got down on their knees as heavily armed HYDRA agents aimed at them. They were cuffed and loaded into one of the SUV's.
"He looked right at me like he didn't even know me", Steve said.
"How is that even possible?" Sam asked, "It was, like, 70 years ago".
"Maybe he was frozen like Steve", Madison said.
"What? No way", Sam said.
"No, Madison's right. It was Zola. Bucky's whole unit was captured in '43", Steve told them, "Zola experimented on him. Whatever he did, helped Bucky survive the fall. They must have found him and..."
"None of that's your fault, Steve", Natasha told him.
"Even when I had nothing, I had Bucky", Steve said.
"I saw one of his memories", Madison told him.
Everyone looked at her.
"It was before you were Captain America", she said, "Whatever they did to him, the memories are still there. Locked away".
"We need to get a doctor here. If we don't put pressure on that wound, she's gonna bleed out here in the truck", Sam said looking at Natasha.
Madison just now realized that her mother had been shot. She stared down at her hands, wishing she knew how her newly found powers worked. Maybe she could heal her.
The guard lit up the gun in their hand and then proceeded to use it on the guard next to them and kicked them in head, effectively knocking them out.
"Ah, that thing was squeezing my brain", the guard said, taking off the helmet.
"Hill!" Madison exclaimed.
"Who's this guy?" Hill asked, looking at Sam.
After escaping the van, thanks to Hill's help, they arrived at a bunker.
Sam and Steve helped Natasha and Madison out of the van before they went inside.
Someone came running towards them.
"GSW. She's lost at least a pint", Hill said.
"Maybe two", Sam added.
"Let me take her", the man said.
"She'll want to see him first", Hill said.
"Wait. See who?" Madison asked.
Hill led them deeper into the bunker and they saw Fury laying in a hospital bed.
Madison's knees nearly gave out in relief.
"About damn time", he said, causing her to laugh.
The man patched Natasha up as Fury explained what was going on.
"Lacerated spinal column, cracked sternum, shattered collarbone, perforated liver, and one hell of a headache", Fury said, listing off his injuries. He looked at Madison. "Kinda like you after the Battle of Manhattan, except I don't have an Asgardian who's sweet on me".
The topic of the Battle of Manhattan was still a sore subject for Madison.
"Don't forget your collapsed lung", the man said.
"Let's not forget that. Otherwise, I'm good", Fury said.
"They cut you open. Your heart stopped", Natasha told him.
"Tetrodotoxin B. Slows the pulse to one beat a minute", Fury explained, "Banner developed it for stress. Didn't work so great for him, but we found a use for it".
"Why all the secrecy? Why not just tell us?" Steve asked.
"Any attempt on the Director's life had to look successful", Hill answered.
"Can't kill you if you're already dead", Fury remarked, "Besides, I wasn't sure who to trust".
"Not sure who to trust?" Madison snapped.
"Madison..." Steve said in a warning tone.
"No. You know what? I'm sick and tired of this".
"Of what?" Steve asked her.
"Of this. Of running, of not knowing where the hell these powers came from, not knowing how to use them, being scared that I came to DC for nothing..." Madison trailed off. "Come find me when you guys have a plan", Madison said, storming off.
"Madison!" Steve yelled.
"Let her go. Let her calm down", Natasha told him, "She'll come back. She can't get far".
Madison stepped outside and breathed in the fresh air. She came to DC for Steve and naively thought that things would go back to the way they were.
Did he ever love her in the first place?
Did she ever truly love him in the first place?
Or were they just clinging to each other because each other was all they had?
