Terra. Gaia. Mother Earth. Call her what you like, it makes no difference. We are her children. We are spread across her surface, feeding from her bounty.
Like any mother, she loves her children. Mothers always do. She gave birth to us; she nurtured us; indulged us in our childish whims. And, like any mother, she has punished us when she needed to, to make us see the error of our ways. But, as we have grown older and more rebellious, we have stopped listening to our mother. The consequences are all around us: the extremes of temperature, the violent storms, the mass extinctions.
While a mother's love is unconditional, it is not without limits. It is tempered with discipline and respect. A true mother's love hurts. And our Mother Earth loves all of us deeply.
