I awoke to the sound of rustling. Slowly peeling open my eyes, I gazed up at Alex as he was buckling himself up and hurriedly redressing. His beautiful black hair was shimmering in the tinted red light that shone through the curtains from the sunrise. With a soft gasp, I tugged at my loose covers, feeling the breeze tickle my bared flesh. Hiding my immodesties, I sat up and looked at him, face reddened.
"Princess, calm down." he whispered in fear, eyes wide and terror boiling within their beautiful sky-blue. "Please, we must calm down. We need to... hide this." he whispered.
"We... we... O-oh God..." I gulped, covering my mouth in terror. My pulse raced in my chest, my hands clenching onto my lips. "Did we..?"
"If anyone asks," he narrowed his eyes at me, tying his chest-plate tightly across his taut, muscly torso as he did so. "I forced you. " I recoiled in shock, gazing at him. "Alex, no..."
"I won't let you be hurt!" he hissed and held my hands gently, his beautiful blue eyes staring into mine. "Please, darling. Don't fight this..." I sobbed and gulped, holding him close. "I dug my own grave, I won't drag you with me." he pulled my arms, tugging me close.
I placed my hands on his chest. "Father will understand... He'll let us be together if we tell him we're in love!" He smiled softly, pulling back and looking down into my eyes. "You're too naive... I'd be arrested and you'd be kept in your chambers to greet and talk to your..." he swallowed the words. "Your suitors." It seemed as though the words made him sick. "Our tryst must stay a secret, my love. Until I find Helga's killer and we can shoo away these suitors, at least." I bit my tongue and gulped, looking down at the floor as i pulled away from him, missing the feeling of his skin on mine. "I understand, Alex."
He placed a hand on my cheek, his beautiful blue eyes shining with incomparable pain and longing. I wanted to kiss him, touch him and make him smile like when we were children. He pulled away again and steeled his gaze, putting on his helmet and gauntlets before bowing and walking out, carrying his sword sheath.
At that moment, I'd never felt more lonely. My lover had left me without even a goodbye in a room haunted by the memory of my friend. I was stood where the pool of ruby was, where her insides and entrails bowed to the floor in submission to her killers.

As I sat in the dining hall with my family and my suitors, it was silent and lonely. Yama was continuing to be his happy, joyful self and Dov was morose as per usual, but the rest of them were silent, not daring to speak or barely move. Or at least, that's what I thought. "Princess, you seem sad." Miklos murmured, eating as he looked up at me. "Will you tell us what is the matter?"
I gulped, putting down my utensils, looking over at them. "I'm... I'm sorry, i can't..." I whispered, standing up, teary eyed. "Young lady, you will sit down." My father glared. "You cannot keep running from your duty, Y/n." With a whimper and a pleading look, I sat back down and looked to the red-haired twin. "I'm mourning my friend." I whispered softly, no longer wishing to eat. "I don't want to talk about this anymore, father... please, can I go?" I turned to my father, biting my lip. "No. Sit and eat." he grumbled, not looking back at me.
"Childish." Dov huffed. "Are you a toddler or a woman?" he hissed at me, red eyes glaring deep into mine.
"Pardon me for mourning the death of my friend." I snapped back, furious. Dov stood up sharply, eyes burning with a fury I hadn't ever seen in a man or woman before- the fire of a demon. "I haven't mourned my father, or my mother, or my kingdom when we fell into disrepair. I haven't mourned any of it, instead I came here, to you, to wed you and save my people. Don't sit and die in your despair. Do something." he hissed back.
I froze. A deep silence hung in the air. Dov turned his gaze away and excused himself, storming out. I realised, in that moment, he wouldn't risk killing Helga when his entire country and all of his people were on the line, especially when he himself is hiding his mourning. In that moment, I felt guilty. for snapping at him and being furious with him, when in fact I had no right to be. Yes, I lost my dearest friend, but he lost everyone.
Guilty, I stood up and followed after him. "King Dov..." i whispered, going to the young man. He turned back to me, emotionless. "yes, princess?"
"I'm sorry for your loss."
The words seemed to hit him hard. he flinched visibly, eyes narrowing on me as if he was trying to read me for some kind of trick. I just stood there and let him glare at me and analyse me. Then, for the first time, his eyes softened, his demeanour grew warmer as he looked at me. "And I'm sorry for yours." he whispered back, eyes now cast down to the floor. He wasn't a murderer, or a brutal king, he was a boy, no longer sure of who he was. Gently, I took his hand and smiled "It wasn't you.." before letting go and walking back to my room.
There was still a killer in our midst, but at least I knew it wasn't Dov. One down, five to go.
