After several failed attempts of me trying to stand up on my own, the district 7 victor and I realized I wasn't going to be able to walk to the breakfast table myself. He slung my arm across his shoulders and helped walk me there. On our way, a couple of important questions popped into my head.
"Hey how long have I been out?" I asked a little unsure, I wasn't completely positive I wanted to know the answer.
"Hmm.." He thought about this as if he wasn't sure himself. "About a day and a half I guess."
"You guess?"
"Well I'm not very good with time you see, it has a way of..." He waved a hand around as if to describe the rest of the sentence.
"Getting away from you?" I offered.
"Yes! That's it!" He exclaimed.
"Alright so what happened yesterday?" I asked trying to figure out how long had really passed.
"You were passed out." The Victor said dismissively. "By the way, you snore."
"You were watching me sleep!"
"Watching, no. But someone had to keep an eye on you so you didn't choke on your tongue or something. Besides..." He leaned into my ear to whisper and I stiffened, but I knew I could trust him. "Guards..."
That hadn't been what I was expecting, but he was right. After the fuss I had caused they may have been given orders to "take care" of me in some way to teach me, and the rest of the nation, a lesson. They couldn't do that if he was in the room.
"Oh" was the only thing I could get out. We walked the rest of the way to the dining room in silence despite having a thousand questions swirling in my head, which included the unanswered question of how long I had slept. It didn't feel right asking them, after what we just discussed. Especially since some of them might get me in trouble. Again. Will you stop with that already, I hissed in my head, You're already sentenced to death you might as well dick around as much as possible while you still can!
Before I could even figure out which question I was going to ask we reached the dining car. Before we could enter the victor stopped me, pulling my arm of my shoulders and moving in front of me. He opened his mouth as if he wanted to ask me something, but I beat him to it. Although I knew who this man was and I knew his past, for the life of me I couldn't remember his name.
"Not to be rude but, it seems I have forgotten your name..." The sentence sounded odd coming out of my mouth but it was the only way I could think of phrasing such a rude thing. The victor still gasped and appeared to be highly offended. So much for proper phrasing.
"You don't remember me?" the Victor asked shocked.
"I'm sorry, I do remember everything, my sister, you, everything. Just not your name, that's it. I swear." The words flew from my mouth, I felt so guilty not remembering. After everything that had happened I should know everything about the man but thinking made my head hurt so I tried to avoid it.
He opened his mouth, most likely to tell me his name, when I shouted "Damiana!". I remembered his name. I knew it was there, but figuring it out had given me a headache. "That's your name." I said while rubbing my temple with one hand. I saw a flash of old memories here and there. The pieces coming together to give me a story instead a broken image. Everything around this man was a lot clearer now, but the thinking had caused my brain to pound. Damiana's brow furrowed at me as if I had done something wrong.
"What!?" I said a little more aggressively than intended. I had finally pieced everything together despite how much it hurt my head and here Damiana was looking at me as if I had insulted his mother.
"If it hurts so much to think, then don't do it. Alright?" he said almost sounding frustrated. "Let's go.", he put my arm across his shoulders like before and placed his hand on my hip. His face still wore a scowl. "Oh, and what I was originally going to say was, " he said this without looking at me, but his face turned to me now, "Be prepared."
"There's no need to be so protective Dami." I told him with a smirk.
He seemed to smile at this but his eyes still looked saddened. I couldn't tell if he was speaking of the whole journey ahead of me at this point or what was beyond the dining cars door, as he seemed to be stalling. Or both. Either way I was too hungry to care and nudged him forward. He removed his eyes from mine and reached for the door, which was now moving on its own. Dami pulled his hand back and the door slid open. And there stood that stupid boy again.
