Fandy bounced his leg, watching the movie drag on with seemingly no logical reason why. He checked the clock that was on the far wall again, sighing when he saw that not a minute had passed since the last glance at it.
In twenty minutes, he was walking off of campus to the café nearby where he had told Zach to meet him. He had a date.
It was okay for him to think about that and not class, right? This movie was boring and the point of showing it was to demonstrate a film gone south.
Eventually, the movie ended, and Fandy escaped the class faster than he ever had before. It was now twelve, and he was late. He practically jogged to get to the café even close to on time.
It was still raining out, and Fandy's hair was damp when he opened the door. On the far side of the café sat Zach.
He was looking even more dashing today, putting Fandy's old hoodie to shame. Blue jeans and a brown leather jacket framed the curves that made up his body. He raised a white ceramic tea cup to his lips and took a small sip, putting it back down. His small black notebook was sitting by the saucer.
Fandy walked towards him with a smile, sitting down in the chair across from him. Zach's eyes widened, but in a good way, like he was more than excited to see Fandy.
"Hi." Zach said, his eyes tracing up and down Fandy's face. "You want something?"
"Tea would be nice. I can wait until the waiter c-"
"Waitress!" Zach motioned her over, smiling at her charmingly. "A tea for my date, please."
"Of course." She smiled at Fandy. "Anything else?"
Fandy ordered lunch, as did Zach, and she walked away, leaving the two men alone.
"We should get to know each other." Fandy leaned over the table, making the contents on it shake. "Let's play twenty questions."
"Okay." Zach smirked. "You start."
"Where are you from?" Fandy had thought about this a lot. The university they were attending was in Taipei, and he wasn't from here. He guessed Zach wasn't either.
"Taitung." He answered. The point of the game was to ask surface-level questions that were had to fit into normal conversation. "And you?"
"Changhua." He responded. The waitress swooped in, placing his tea next to him. "Ah, thank you."
"My turn." Zach said, and Fandy didn't care that he was breaking the made up rules because he had already asked a question. "What's your major?"
"Acting."
"Interesting." Zach nodded, taking another sip of his tea.
Fandy couldn't stop staring at his lips, now moist with flavours of cinnamon and ginger. He must have been going crazy! Fandy had never wanted to kiss someone so badly in his life.
"Fandy?" Zach's voice, humming from those lips, were the only thing that brought him back down.
"Huh?"
"I said, do you like to go to plays?"
"Oh..." Fandy smiled, relieved it wasn't something else. "I do. Movies too."
"I'll take you sometime." Zach said, licking his lips and grinning. He took another sip of tea. "Your turn."
"Okay... uh..." Fandy looked down at his tea, trying not to get distracted by Zach again. "Have any siblings?"
"No."
"I do!"
"How many?"
"Two." Fandy was looking at him now. "A brother and a sister."
"Very cool." Zach replied. "I only lived with my parents. And a lot of dogs." This made Fandy sigh in excitement.
"I wish that the college let us have pets in the dorm." He pouted, making Zach giggle. "I would have so many dogs."
"Me too." Zach laughed again. "In the future, I'm sure I'll have more dogs than children."
Fandy nodded, drinking his tea. He didn't understand how Zach had made it last this long. He took one sip, and half the cup was gone.
Fandy remembered it was his turn. "Uhh, if you could travel to any location, where would you go?"
This question made Zach stop, thinking for a moment. Fandy liked how he looked when he was thinking, eyebrows furrowed, lips pursed, trying to figure out the answer to his question.
He raised a finger when he found it. "Italy." He said, which made Fandy lean in further to hear his explanation. "I've always been interested in it. The food, the architecture, the people." He smiled, spinning his cup on the table. Fandy noticed he was out of tea.
This was his chance.
"Waiter!" He called, holding his hand up. A male waiter came over, smiling with closed lips. His hands were behind his back.
"Can I help you, sir?" He asked.
"Yes, please. Another tea for my... uh... friend." Fandy stumbled upon the word 'date', but didn't choose it. The waiter nodded.
"Right away."
Zach leaned in as soon as the waiter had left the table. "You didn't have to do that." He said, but Fandy only shrugged.
"It's my turn to do something nice for you." He said, smiling. Fandy's forearms were now across the table, exposing his hands to Zach.
"Well, I appreciate it." He smiled, then reached out, and took Fandy's hand. He was holding the fingers, staring at the back of it, when he made eye contact with Fandy, pulling his hand up close to his mouth and kissing the back of it. The kiss was short and more than polite, but it still made Fandy stop, his eyes widen.
"I have your food here." The first waitress smiled, making the two men break apart, Fandy whipping his arm back to his own side.
"Thank you." They both said when she put it in front of them.
Zach smiled widely, two dimples showing on his cheeks. "Looks great. Let's eat."
