Knock knock knock
Marina silently rose up from her bed, the thin blanket around her covered in papers and scrap metals. She had practically stayed up all night working on the prototype of her invention. Once it was basically done marina had wrote a letter to cloud and trudged through slimeskin garrison to find the nearest guard to deliver it to him. She was still exhausted, and the uncomfortable metal goggles she had recently received did not help. In the back of her mind was a tune that just looped endlessly, but as annoying as it was it gave her more motivation too. With them on it was like her thoughts just.. disappeared while she worked. Getting out of the bed marina opened the door and gave a warm smile at the octocopter hovering in the doorway.
Look at that cloud. Now you can really fly.
He grinned at her, and marina pulled him in for a quick hug. "How has it been?" She asked, sitting on the edge of the bed next to him. "Oh the army has been great! There's so many other octocopters! They've been teaching us how to aim from the little funnel on our helmets, we practice against training dummies, I even have a station to guard already! Sadly it's nowhere near slimeskin garrison, but it's still so great! Me Terra and Brian are even at the same location and patrol! Marina gave Cloud a soft smile. "That sounds great. I'm glad your happy." Cloud raised an eyebrow at her. "But are you happy? How's it been being an engineer?" Marina paused, adjusting the metal plated goggles on her head. "As soon as I prove myself it'll be a lot better, that's for sure. I got 5 days now to prove my idea is useful or else I'm gonna be in the army. But besides that constant dread hanging over me it's been great. Just a lot of classes and blueprint making. And tinkering now and then, so.. beginner stuff." Cloud gave her a tiny frown, nudging her with his head. "C'mon marina. Judging by all these blueprints of really cool looking designs, your doing great! I'm sure King Octavio will see that." The room was filled with silence for a bit. "So why did you ask me here anyway?" Marina sat up, walking towards her desk and grabbing the model propeller hat with the small motors on the side. "For this. It's my ideal ticket to prove myself, and I needed a test subject. Don't worry, it's not dangerous. I wouldn't test something dangerous on you." Cloud gave her a reassuring smile. "Marina you know I trust you. If you say it's not dangerous then I'll believe you. Plus, anything to help you out." Marina opened her mouth to say thanks but something stopped her. A little voice in her head telling her his help wasn't important or necessary. She only needed to focus on engineering. Her goggles seemed to jolt lightly on her head as this thought process happened. She shook the feeling off, giving cloud a smile hoping that was enough. He only smiled back, slipping off his helmet, as marina adjusted the new one onto him. Once it was fitted, cloud activated it and hovered in the air. How octocopters activated they're helmets was something marina would probably never know. ''Twas a mystery to everyone but those flying octarians. "It's a bit heavy.. but I like it! Now what do I do?" Cloud asked, twirling in the air, his feet dangling. "Ok.. the motors are supposed to detect enemy ink and force its holder away from its aim." Marina decided to keep the description simple, not wanting to geek out and keep them here all day. Cloud made an "oh!" Noise, but then looked confused. "But uh.. We'll need enemy ink, and we're not supposed to change our ink colors marina.. we could get in trouble..." Marina nodded. "I thought of that." She grabbed a metal rod from her desk and slowly poked something from underneath her bed. Cloud only gasped. "Is that an inkling Splattershot?! A real one?!" Marina nodded, a grin forming on her face. "Yeah, it is!" The octocopter landed on the ground with a slight thud. "How did you get it here?! It looks like its ink color is yellow! It should of changed to purple when you touched it!" Marina used the rod to lift the nozzle up, before sliding a book underneath the weapon so it was slanted upwards. "Well.. I was looking through the junkyard for stuff to make the helmet with when I found it! I have no idea how it got here. It's slightly damaged but I found some trash, poked the handle, and it still works! It barely had any ink left so I had to be careful. Butttttt I thought using it to test the helmet would be great!" Cloud raised an eyebrow. "That's super cool but it still doesn't answer how you got it here with an inkling ink color." Marina sheepishly rubbed the back of her head. "I Uh.. poked it.. all the way here..." all the octoling received was a quiet "wow" from the octocopter as he hovered slightly in the air. "How many shots do we have?" Marina tapped her chin for a second. "Two I'm pretty sure." Cloud grinned. "Then we use 1 for testing, and the other when it works and we bring it to the king." Marina sighed at his confidence. "What if it doesn't work though?" If Cloud had arms Marina was positive he would of shrugged them. "Dunno. But it will work. I know it will." She smiled lightly, nodding. "Alright. I believe you. Get in position." The octarian hovered in the air in range of the nozzle, closing his eyes and bracing himself.
"3..."
The rod was picked up again.
"2..."
Cloud was now squinting, repeating for probably the 100th time in his mind that marina had this and wouldn't hurt him.
"1..."
Silence.
"Fire!"
The Splattershot trigger was poked, and a small ball of ink was propelled forwards. In almost an instant the motor's on the helmet let out a puff of smoke, and cloud was jerked to the side as the yellow ink hit the wall with a splat, leaving a splotch on the wall. The two were in shocked silence for a few moments. Marina couldn't believe it. Her first real invention. Her (hopefully) ticket to her dreams.
And it had worked.
"Well."
Cloud broke the silence, grinning widely, his eyes shining with delight and excitement.
"I believe we have a King to visit."
