❝Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art
.... It has no survival value;
rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.❞-C.S. Lewis
recap:
Scott discovered that his sister, Toni, has a way of communicating with Hector - the man Scott believes knows the whereabouts of Jaxon. Jaxon is currently missing, trapped inside of Hector's apartment with his ex girlfriend, Penelope - who happens to also be Hector's cousin.
Would recommend rereading the prior chapters to be more sure if the events.
✏️ SCOTT✏️
Toni's teeth were chattering. I wanted to sooth her some way, tell her that her life wasn't going to end just because she was going on a date with Hector. There was no way I could muster such a response, though. We both knew Hector was an erratic and impulsive man. You didn't know what to expect. As much as I wanted to pat her shoulder, lean in a little closer, and show her some support, no part of me could. It felt like I was lying to her.
"You okay?"
I asked her that, out of anything else. My tongue was tied and my fingers were on my lap, toying with the fabric of my button down shirt. I had tossed my wool sweater in the back, feeling sweltering hot in the heated car. It was November, meaning the weather in Texas was beginning to bite my skin whenever I stepped outdoors. Sooner than later, we would be expecting snow fall in the DFW area.
"Toni," I called out. "Sis, are you—"
"Shut up."
"I'm sorry."
"You're not," she said, matter of fact. The rattle of her teeth was so promenade and loud that I could hear it from where I sat, resting in the passenger seat. My brother Roman was driving, too busy with the radio to even care to listen to us. There was a sports game on that he was searching for, flipping through his stations. Our plans to figure out what Christmas gift we'd get our parents was put on hold.
"I don't want to do this," my sister blurted out. "I can't do this, Scott."
"Sis, you can," I assured her. I reached around, clasping her with a firm hand and tried to give her a comforting look. "You are so strong."
"This is fucking crazy," she hissed, "how do you know that Jax is there? You're just guessing."
Jaxon Miller had been missing for more than a week now. There were no leads on where he was. The police were doing their own investigation. As helpful as they had been, it seemed like they had reached another dead end. They had reviewed the security cameras at the hospital, checked all the plates, and even cross anaylzied the eye witness accounts.
