The next day word spread about Derek breaking up with his girlfriend and every single senior girl was been all over him, asking when he's going to date again. His answer was the same each time, "Until I find someone real." Then he just walks away from the girl as she huffs and walks in the other direction disappointed. I've yet to stop drooling over him during lunch, but I can't bring myself to talk to him again. All of a sudden I see a lunch tray thud next to me. Lucy plops down next to me with sunglasses on and a bottle of Advil in her left hand."Ugh, my head is pounding. Remind me never to drink again. Ha just kidding, but seriously. Ow." Lucy whines.
"What do you mean drink? I thought you were just making out with Flynn." Cleo looked at her friend confused.
"What? I made out with FLYNN?? DUDE THAT'S AWESOME!" Lucy yelled a bit too loudly and caught the attention of the neighboring tables, "Whatcha lookin' at?!"
"Wait, you didn't know that you were making out with Flynn? What do you remember?" Cleo turned to her friend with concern.
"Well, I got into the car with Flynn, his brother and you. Then we went to the game and we got a spot in the bleachers. I got a coke and Flynn said he had something better. He gave me a metal bottle and the drink burned a littl- oH MY GOD IT WAS ALCOHOL!?" Lucy realized, "Jeez I got drunk and made out with Flynn!"
"Well, I can't blame you for getting drunk accidentally, "Cleo started, "you're forgiven for forgetting me, but never again!"
The girls laughed it off and returned to normal lunch activities, eating, staring at the boys, and gossiping.
3 o'clock hit and Lucy came running over the Cleo in excitement. She stopped, jumped and squealed before revealing, "Flynn asked me to come to his brothers party! You can come too! And guess what! Derek will be there! We can finally get our mans. So you in??"
Cleo had never gone to a high school party and if TV has taught her anything it's that they always go wrong. Kids get too drunk. Some get pregnant and others are left scarred and heartbroken, but hearing the words 'get our mans' was all she needed to be convinced into what would be one of the most important nights of her life. "I'm in!" Cleo smiled.
Tonight was the night she talked to Derek. Even if she was terrified she was going to do it. She would talk to him, let him see the real her, and finally she would make him fall for her. Even if she felt like she was going to chicken out, she had Lucy to push her in the right direction.
"Damn this place looks fucking awesome!" Lucy laughed and took her best friends hand while walking in. Lights of all colors flashed, latest hits blasted throughout the house and red plastic cups littered every surface. This wasn't usually there scene, but Cleo was glad she came. Cleo lets go of her friends hand and walks over to the kitchen. She turns a corner when suddenly she smacks into somebody, knocking her over. "Ow! What the hell!" She responded in frustration.
"Sorry man. I have to stop knocking you over!" The guy chuckled.
Cleo recognizes the voice immediately and turned bright red in embarrassment. "Y-yeah." She stuttered.
"Wait, were you the one in the woods yesterday? The one that was crying?" Derek asked realizing that they had met 24 simply hours. "Jeez are you stalking me?"
"Wha-what? No! M-my friend brought m-" Cleo started.
"Relax. I'm kidding. Nice to see you again."
"Yeah nice to see you again." Cleo calmed down.
From the other side of the room Lucy had watched the whole scene and immediately felt sick. She had never liked Derek, but she felt something extremely shady in that moment. She was proud of Cleo for getting some courage, but she made sure to keep her eye on Derek. Suddenly from behind her Flynn grabs her waist and draws her closer. "Hey sweetheart, want a drink?" He asks.
Lucy turns around and slaps him. "You got me drunk yesterday!?"
"Y-yeah, but chill I would never do anything to hurt you. I just wanted you to have some fun. The game seemed to be boring you." He explained.
"Oh. Ok. Thank you," Lucy blushed, "so... wanna dance?"
"Definitely," Flynn chuckled.
It seemed like everything was going just perfect that night. Cleo's worries melted away as she talked to Derek. She peered over to see Lucy with Flynn dancing. Seeing her friend so brave inspired her to do the same. "Hey, Derek! Would you like to-"
Cleo was interrupted by Derek. "Hold that thought, someone needs me." With that he walked over to a girl standing in the corner. She was far prettier than Cleo and so she immediately got away while she could. Cleo ran upstairs into the bathroom and sat on the floor. "How could I be so stupid. He would never like you! You're 3 years younger!" She began to cry.
Meanwhile, Derek's conversation with the girl in the corner turned crappy. "No!"
"Oh come on! You're not with that slut anymore why not have some fun with me. I mean the freshmen are starting to want you. It's pathetic how many girls your denying!"
"Fuck off," Derek ended the conversation and walk back to where he expected the freshman girl to be, but she had disappeared. "Ugh, screw this! I'm going upstairs."
While walking past the bathroom he heard someone soft sniffles and debates knocking on the door. He ultimately decides to knock and asks, "Is anyone in there? Are you ok?"
Cleo, being the one inside instantly recognizes it's Derek and wipes her eyes quickly. She opens the door, "Oh hey! I'm fine!"
He walks in and closes the door, "No your not. I saw you crying yesterday. What's wrong."
She doesn't know what to say so she doesn't say anything at all. She puts her head into her knees and mumbles a question, "you got a girlfriend yet?"
"No I think I'm gay." He responds.
Cleo's head shoots up in confusion, "What?!"
"I'm kidding!" He chuckles, "You feel better now?"
"Yeah," Cleo chuckles, "and the reason I've been so upset is 'cause every time I see the person I like he's kissing or talking to some other girl. I just want him to be mine..."
"Oh wow, that sucks." He responds, "who the guy?"
At that moment all Cleo wanted to do was say 'you' and kiss him. So what she said was...
